Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Still round the corner we may meet...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

she says it is a little big now, but she bought it before she knew

Well, if it's big now, I can't see that the next 6 weeks are going to make that much difference since she's not so far along.

Funny...I've only had to take each boy to The Van once in their whole lives!

Yep, they learn fast when given the opportunity! ;o)

Coffee Time!

Ever have one of those days when you think you're dumping a 25" rock?

Now all the mommies out there will "dump" on me: "Nothing compares with childbirth!"
True. But you don't regret it (more than twice a week), do you?

Heh... She said "I am not looking forward to having to put up with anybody's opinion on what Tim and I SHOULD do. I am sure we are capable of figuring it out and we also realize that no parents are perfect and all make mistakes." So I said "Ok - I'll be sensitive to that" and she just came back with "No you won't!"

I told her I would be good, I promise, no "helping" until asked!

Now she wants to bet money.

This is gonna be a long 18 years!

Dunno, my mother had c-sections. Eight times. She only guilts me, though, because she went through labor for hours before they did the c-section.

The whole childbirth thing is scary...

Oh, I'll restrain you all right....

Whoa, everyone else wigged out before 6. That happens, like, never. I promised two hours, though...

LOL! There is a book about the Bearenstain Bears where the cubs get the "gimmies." It is VERY important to have children understand that when you take them to the store, they don't always get what they want, and this book does have a solution. It doesn't hurt that kids also love the book. It ~really~ helped with elfboy. He still gets the gimmies (and the grabbies - grabbing stuff out of others' hands) sometimes, but knows what getting the gimmies means, and that is is NOT okay.

For the most part, he does really well, but you are right... EVERY kid has their moments in public. And it IS embarrassing. Usually, elf-boy gets one item that he picks out, and if he asks for something else, he has to put the other item back. He has to make a decision as to which item he wants more.

If we are not on a toy expedition, I make sure he understands in advance that he is not getting a toy, and if he asks for one we will leave the store.

My brothers have learned how to behave in public, so I can take them places, but they used to have trouble in church. Dad would haul them out by one ear and paddle 'em if they didn't behave.

I really get maddest about children who won't behave in church - not little ones, but if you're ten years old you ought to be able to sit still and not talk!

but they used to have trouble in church.

Well, they have a rebellious older sister for a role model.

As for behaving in church, I think that all depends on their exposure to it, and if they *know* what is expected of them in that scenario. If the service is somethign to which they are accustomed to attending, then yes, they had better know how to behave by the age of ten. Then again, I have seen teenagers behave worse than a 6 yr old in a church service (and I am *sure* they know how to behave).

Yeah, people just don't behave in church these days... I've been in service and cell phones have gone off!

Because our church doesn't have a children's service, most of the kids know how to behave. But visiting kids are usually clueless. Still, my youngest brother has Down Syndrome and has been behaving in services since he was five. It's in the parenting more than anything.

I'm good in church! I share hymnbooks nicely and check all the Scripture references and even wear a hat, every week.

ROFL, I have to admit, with reading this post, I had a vision of "Anne of Green Gables" where all the girls were wearing hats in church, and a delinquent Gilbert Blythe shooting a spitball at them. I don't remember if that is actually in the book or not, but that is what I envisioned.

I wear hats, my mother wears hats sometimes, my sisters wear hats very rarely, and a little old lady wears a hat. That's it. Nobody wears hats to church any more. It's sad.

OK, here's the original of the recipe, in case anyone wants THAT version. I actually modernized the language a little...it's from an old enough cook book that it says to make sure you scald the milk if it's unpasturized, and that homogenized milk takes longer to cook into custard than non.

Baked Custard - 5 servings

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.

Blend together:
2 cups milk
1/4 to 1/2 cup sugar or 1/4 cup honey
1/8 tsp salt

Add and beat well:
2 whole eggs or 4 egg yolks

If you want to unmold the custard, add an extra egg. The greater the proportion of yolk, the tenderer the custard will be. If you use 2 egg whiles to 1 yolk, quite a stiff custard results. Add:
1/2 tsp vanilla or almond extract

When this is all well beaten, pour into a baking dish or individual custard cups. Dust with nutmeg. Place the molds in a pan or heavy ceramic baking dish and fill the pan or dish with hot but not boiling water. Bake an hour or more for the casserole and 30-40 min. for the cups.

To test for doneness, insert a knife near the edge of the cup. If the blade comes out clean, the custard will be solid all the way through when cooled.

OK, how I changed this...first off, since it's just me, I only made a half recipe. And for the sugar, I substituted 3 packets of Splenda (keep in mind this was for half as much) - it was plenty sweet. I'm assuming you could use the cream mixture you mentioned in place of the milk, 2J, though I would keep an eye on it while cooking since the timing might be a little different.

LOL! There is a book about the Bearenstain Bears where the cubs get the "gimmies."

I always liked the Berenstain Bears book, except they usually made Papa Bear look hapless! They always had good 'lessons' for the kids to learn about greediness, messiness, and general behavior.
