NEWPORT BEACH A 53-year-old Costa Mesa man on Tuesday was convicted of punching his pet macaw and slamming him against his boat.
Anthony James Ellis, a member of the Newport Beach Elks Club, faces up to three years in state prison. He was found guilty on two felony counts of animal cruelty and animal abuse.
Several Elks Club members saw Ellis hit the bird on his boat, which was docked at the club, officials said.
Ellis grabbed the bird named Johnny by the legs, held him upside down and struck him repeatedly with a closed fist, according to the police report.

Sorry its LA times, but a pretty unusual story here. I suppose if he was choking the chicken instead of beating the bird he would have gotten off with a lighter sentence.

I did a search in the criminal records database on this guy. He's a repeat offender. Records indicate that not only was he caught beating the pet bird, but he has a long history of choking the chicken.
To: Slicksadick
Good thing he didn't choke a chicken.

Good. Hope he gets a very large cellmate who enjoys holding him by the feet and bashing his head against the bars. I've about had it with all the animal abuse and senseless killing posts here today especially since 3 feet from this computer is a baby bird the kids brought in yesterday because some idiot was throwing it on the ground.

I know someone who chokes their chicken... and I have a friend who spanks his monkey.... worst of all, I know a woman who pets... oh never mind.

Th ebird is fine, the drunk owner is claiming self defense...
Ellis, who is still free on bail, had consistently denied that he had deliberately hurt his pet. He claimed that he was drunk, that the bird started biting him and that he simply reacted to the pain and acted in self defense. Neither Ellis nor his attorney, William Randall, were available for comment on Wednesday.

having raised a 34-year old Double-Yellow Amazon for the past 34 years, I can tell you that not everyone has the patience required to keep a parrot as a pet.
They are often misunderstood as they regard their humans as a part of their flock and they think they should eat what you eat, go where you go, etc. If they can't, they think they're being left behind by their flock and they call out to you.
My bird can make a sound loud enough to crack a paper cup.
