No decent public transportation. Stinking high taxes of all sorts, especially property taxes. High cost of living. Exorbitant utility rates. Government gives monopolies to certain companies (Cablevision, Lilco, etc), thereby preventing competition and lower prices. Need a car to go everywhere and anywhere (which is not a bad thing in itself, a car is quite convenient, but the costs of gas, insurance and occasional repairs are killing me).
Bank account is always empty, and the costs of living here prevent me from getting ahead, saving some money, and replensishing my account. Just when I think I have managed to save a few dollars, along comes another expense that empties it out. Car breaks down, car insurance is due, utility bills are due, etc.
It's not easy being poor in many other states, but in Long Island it's much worse in comparison. It's easier to be poor in say North Carolina than it is here.
All defenders of Long Island, I dont want to hear it: "But, but but Long Island has nice beaches, and and and lots of things to do! Nightclubs, shopping malls, parks, the Hamptons, etc." Blow it out your (expletive deleted), LI defenders. I don't want to hear it. Face it, it SUCKS here and it's getting worse, as if that were still possible.
I can't wait to escape from this fiscal hellhole (I got 5-10 years more on my "sentence" before I can move). If Long Island were a person instead of a geographical location, I'd like to bitchslap it for being the bloodsucking parasite that it is.
Friggin Long Island
Unless you are being detained by the state or the feds, and wear orange jumpsuits, you need to move. Life is too short to live someplace you hate. Life is now and you need to find a more congenial place to live.
Eaisier said than done. If it were that easy for me I would have done that yesterday at the very least. Believe me, I've explored my options, and I'm stuck here for the duration.
Great description of your problem. Consider moving to Huntsville Alabama when you have the chance. There are lots of high tech jobs, NASA, and Fortune 500 companies here. The cost of living is very reasonable.
What about menial, low skills jobs? For example, is it possible for a stock boy or a hamburger flipper to earn a living in your area?
Geez. You mean Gloria didn't come through? Well I never! Some people are so ... ... unreliable - yeh, that's it - unreliable.

Your paragraph clearly defines the county I live in. Probably others, as well. Liberal BS has taken a stranglehold over many cities. And yes.................it DOES suck.
Unless one is earning close to six figures, or a lottery winner, it is damn near impossible to live here. If anyone is thinking of moving here...dont! Damn Long Island economics is DETERMINED to drive me further into poverty. It isnt enough that I'm already out of money, local economics demands an extra quart of my blood.
I agree. That's why I moved to CT. But now CT sucks, and I have 8 more years on my sentence...
Hi lowbridge.
I love Long Island. I moved away twice, and both times, I moved back.
My last move was to Las Vegas. Sure, the cost of living is great there. I was making my months rent in about 3/5 of a week. That means, in 3 working days, I made my month's rent for a 2 br. Apt.
However, I would rather pay a little more in rent and taxes and be where I want to be than pay dirt cheap prices. And live in a desert.
I love Long Island. I don't think I will move again.
Billy
Why?
(Maybe you live in better financial circumstances than me)
not at all, i am probably in the *lower* middle class, if anything... But to me, it's worth it because when i was in Vegas, it was just terrible. The first few weeks were heaven and then i became so homesick - no ocean breeze, no beaches, i felt like an out-cast, and worst of all, i wasn't making any friends.
Being back on LI, i now have less income to play with, but I am happier. And hey, how much does it cost to take a drive on ocean parkway? A few bucks for gas, a few bucks for a parking pass...
Sometimes money isn't everything. :)
Billy
I gather that your latest "scam the Nigerians" effort didn't pay off as expected..
Only in photos. :-)
Hmmm... what say you, New York-area FReepers? ;-)
Well Vegas was built out of a desert. It's still in the middle of desert. All sand. No water.

How much does it cost for occasional car repairs and car insurance? When I get my chance, I'm moving south and joining the confederacy.
Sometimes money isn't everything. :)
I wouldnt know. I've never had any money to find that out. I'd like to try though.
So... tell us how you feel :D
I just had a lady yell in my face about YOU people moving in and not even speaking english and treating black people like crap :O) So let's have a LI sucks party together. Seriously, can't be all that bad. For the privilege of living in Hempstead, my mother pays almost $7000 a year in property taxes.
