Alturas trainer dies after horse kicks her in chest

ASSOCIATED PRESS

ALTURAS - A veteran horse trainer died after being kicked in the chest by a horse as she walked behind it.

Sandra Taylor, 60, of Alturas, died Tuesday night at her ranch, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Taylor was walking behind a horse being walked as treatment for an intestinal condition when the horse kicked out its back legs and hit Taylor in the chest.

Taylor had trained horses for abut 40 years, said sheriff's spokeswoman Carrie Rodgers.

I was wondering if it has happened other times - but with today's ability to get news fast and from so many places at once - it just seems freaky -

just my opinion - leaves you wondering don't it :)

Since you're in the mood, how about a Missouri folk song?

Kickin' Maude

VERSE 1
I once knew a southern farmer
By the name of Solomon Slick
He owned a rat-tail kicking mule
O, how th mule could kick

VERSE 2
She kicked my sweetheart in th jaw
She kicked a yella dawg
She kicked a tom-cat o'er th fence
That bad mule's name was Maude

VERSE 3
He hitched her up one morning
And drove her down to town
That mule cut loose to kickin'
Just to let him know she was around

VERSE 4
She beat up several Chinamen
She broke an elephants back
She stopped a Texas T. P. train
And kicked it off the track

VERSE 5
A policeman tried to arrest her
And take her down to jail
He made a flyin' leap at her
An' grabbed her by th tail

VERSE 6
That mule cut loose to kickin'
Policeman where was he
Well, she kicked him out'a his britches
He certainly earned his fee

VERSE 7
And when Maude dies and goes to Heaven
My heart for her will yearn
For I know Maudes gone to Heaven
Cause, she's to tough to burn

Mr. Cansler said he used to hear his Grandfather sing this song too.

These are all such sad stories, and this one- the person was a trainer who had been with horses so many years. They can spook so easily. You have to make desensitizing them as much an important part of their training as anything else. Sometimes when the winds are a certain way it can upset a horse, the sounds of the leaves all being stirred up can make them anxious all day, you never know. Once you do get hurt though, it is quite a valuable lesson and you realize how unbelievably strong and dangerous they can be, and you tend not to take them ever for granted again.

For those out on the west with extra activity in the ground due to earthquakes or volcanoes, the horses must sense this? Do any of you out west notice horses seeming more stirred or anxious with these changes and activity?
