Race horses die mysteriously
The Turffontein horseracing community is extremely concerned about the death of six racehorses in mysterious circumstances at the weekend.
The horses were all from the stable of well-known trainer, George Scott, 73, who has trained more than 100 winners since 1996.
A distraught Oom George, as he is known in racing circles, said on Tuesday he stood by helplessly, watching the expensive racehorses collapse and died one after the other.
"It is a tragedy. It feels as if my entire life's work disappeared before my eyes. One moment there was nothing wrong with the horses and the next moment they collapsed. Minutes later they were dead."
It was not clear what had caused the sudden wave of deaths and the trainer was anxiously awaiting the results of several toxicology tests.
"We sent two carcasses and samples of the feed to Onderstepoort for testing."
Dr Johan Joubert, head of the toxicology unit at Onderstepoort, said the results are expected this morning.
There were suspicions that the horses' feed could have been responsible for the deaths.
The stables received a new delivery of feed on Friday afternoon and the horses ate some of this on Friday night.
The first two horses became ill on Saturday morning and one of them died the same morning. Five more have died since.
Dr Norman Datnow, a local veterinarian specialising in racehorses, explained that the symptoms were similar to that of food poisoning.
"We cannot say for certain at this stage, but it seems as if the horses ingested Warfarin, a type of rat poison."
i wanna be the first...
Bush's fault....
I hope that this was some sort of mistake, there is a special level of hell reserved for people that do this sort of thing.
fortunately, i'm sure that tomorrow night we'll see a bidding war over who can throw more money at the problem of race horses dropping dead in south africa.
Probably just the steroids and coke like Caminitti.
S'K. John Edwards will fix things.
Yeah, and PETA owns it.
Horses will stop dying if Kerry is elected president!
John F. Kerry must have his proportionally adaptable dental implants readied for the last few weeks of the election.
Well now wilbur......
Go, Horseface!
ping
Just to be clear, I think PETA is populated with freaks and no animal has a civil right, but anyone who would intentional poison any animal, if that is what this is, should be horse whipped,
"I hope that this was some sort of mistake, there is a special level of hell reserved for people that do this sort of thing."
I don't hope I know, that if this was intentional those responsible will suffer tens times the fate of the horses they will have never imagined. The mysteries of <^>
Maybe someone kicked them back after all those horse-kicking-human incidents reported last night.
Ping me when you get a really cool "Horse killed by pit bull" story, could ya?
Ambrose, You're amazing!
