For those of you who don't think it's possible, I had my hard drive catch on fire today. I had bought a new pc to replace my old one. I wanted to transfer over all of my old data, so I changed the jumpers, plugged in both drives and turned it on. Silence... then a few seconds later smoke. As I looked over to see what was happening to the new 60GB Maxtor, poof! Fire!!! One of the chips, about a third of an inch square, caught fire. I blew it out, turned off the power and prayed. The Maxtor was dead, but the Western Digital worked just fine in the same spot as the Maxtor. Thank God I didn't lose anything valuable, especially my house!

It can happen, although it is rare.
I have seen some pretty spectacular hardware failures.

Heh. Handing charged caps to fellow students was fun, too.

There's the problem right there - you let the smoke out of your hard drive. Every electronic device requires smoke to function properly. When you let it out or it escapes, the device stops working.
Get some more smoke immediately and refill your hard drive with it. It'll work fine.

Now you know...once you let all the smoke and flame out of electronics, they don't work anymore... :)

So that Maxtor chip designed to detect Western Digital drives does work. Now the hard part is going to be using your warranty.

My very first computer once had a major blo out like that except the metal casing on the drive blew wide open and the disk flew off its spindle, major power surge.
