Word For The Day, Wednesday, November 24, 2004

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. ;-) Practice makes perfect.....post on....

gimcrack \JIM-krak\, noun, adjective:
gimcrackery; noun

1. A trivial mechanism; a device; a toy; a pretty but useless or worthless object; a gewgaw.
2. Tastelessly showy; cheap; gaudy.

The pages in the campaign paper trail released thus far give details on what the Democrats' new category of $250,000 super-donors were explicitly promised for their largess, right down to the "exclusive lapel pin" -- a gimcrack Croix de Guerre from the Democratic National Committee.
--Francis X. Clines, "Donor Is Listed as 'Buddhist Temple' in Democratic Documents," New York Times, December 28, 1996.

Etymology: The origin of gimcrack is uncertain. It is perhaps an alteration of Middle English gibecrake, a slight or flimsy ornament.

Haywire sinuses around here as well, along with itchy eyes, the whole 9 yards.

It's gray and raining here - but at least there is no wind and it's already 57.

Ever so slowly, the swamp is draining and beginning to resemble a back yard again.

We got up to 72 yesterday and rain, rain, rain until 5:30 or so when the sun came out for half an hour-then more rain ahead of a norther with strong winds, and the temperature had dropped to 45 within 2 hours. We may have our first freeze Friday morning, but I hope not-I have a bunch of tomatoes and peppers about to ripen...

I actually like both of those songs-and the rest of that one by Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels "Good golly Miss Molly, You sure like to ball, good golly Miss Molly, you sure like to ball"-but I like Little Richard's original better-nobody can scream quite like Little Richard...

Homework:

As a proven gimcrack of the leftist media, why must the public endure 4+ more months of Blather before he joins his fellow-gimcracks at "60 Minutes"??

That is the proper use of an SUV, not some gimcrackery like riding on the beach!!!!

Hangs head in shame.....we LOVE to stay on the NC Outer Banks at a house that is 4x4 accessible only. Far, far up the beach. Sigh.

SUV also useful for getting out of long winding rural driveway after snow.

Ratherbiased can't possibly leave fast enough for my liking-even so, I still won't watch See BS. How is the weather over your way? It would be a chamber of commerce day up here in the hill country if it wasn't windy enough to blow a small car (like mine) over a cliff.

LOL!!!!!

No need to hang your head in shame!!! Of course those are proper uses of your 4x4 (we just got one for the same purposes!)

I just found the headline amusing because it did not blame the evil SUV for thwe sleazeball's death. I'm just sorry he didn't get more of them.

I'd never thought of that use of an SUV-but I'll be driving my 4X4 to work in a few minutes-it is too windy on the hilly roads with steep drops on either side to take my little car...

Sunny, 53 degrees. Lots of drying out from the past week of monsoons is required.

Even after Blather leaves the big chair, SeeBS will not fundamentally change. Why would it? These people are die-hard KoolAid drinking leftists, and putting a new body in the anchor spot cannot change that.

I'm betting that whatever body they put in that chair will just be a pod person animated by body snatcher Rather (adjusting tinfoil hat)...

Before ol' Dan steps away in disgrace, I think he should be required to do 2 things (which will, of course, never happen):
1. Admit that the magic memos of September were total forgeries, a fraud, and a sham - which Dan helped perpetrate, and...
2. Tell us who won the electoral votes in Ohio.

I know -- fat f'n chance.
