Jeanie Schmidt, a trauma nurse who works at Kaiser hospitals in Santa Clara and Oakland, considers herself one of the lucky ones: She was headed to the tsunami disaster zone Saturday with a group of 25 doctors and nurses from a relief organization.
But many other medical workers have been frustrated in their desire to offer hands-on help. The logistics of getting there are daunting, and relief groups are swamped with experienced volunteers.
``There are so many of us who want to get there and help,'' Schmidt said Friday, as she scrambled to buy medical supplies, hiking boots, a water purification system and a long list of other items she will need to be self-sufficient during the next few weeks.
