I think you may be confusing an acronym with simple
abbreviation. An acronym has to form a legitimate word
that has meaning, e.g., VISTA - stands for Volunteers
in Service to America, yet the word "vista" has a real
and definite meaning apart from the acromym. Today we are
so totally inundated with acronyms that are made up in
advance to represent some group, cause, etc. that they
have almost become meaningless - we live and read in an
endless alphabet soup.
