Discrimination vs. Prejudice

Modern American thinking can be superficial. Conclusions often result from television news, newspaper editorials (uh oh!), or institutions of "higher" learning. It has not always been so.

Note following example from website: Social Psychology 204 Lecture Notes - Prejudice& Discrimination Defining Prejudice- negative attitude toward members of some social group Discrimination- negative behaviors directed toward members of some social group

Juxtapose that to the online Merriam-Webster dictionary. Discrimination 1b: the process by which two stimuli differing in some aspect are responded to differently 2 : the quality or power of finely distinguishing Prejudice 2 a (1) : preconceived judgment or opinion (2) : an adverse opinion or leaning formed without just grounds or before sufficient knowledge

We all practice discrimination. We refuse to walk unprotected and alone at night in crime-ridden areas of most, dangerous American cities. Men are prohibited from using a ladies’ restroom and vice versa. Social gatherings and church-goers are the scene of human groups forming outside. Individuals usually congregate (discriminate) in like kind or of mind. So what contrasts discrimination to prejudice?

The Bible commands discrimination. These actions are circumscribed and defined. One discriminates after first making judgments. Upon what are proper judgments based? Holy Writ instructs us to [1] “abhor that which is evil” and [2] “cleave to that which is good” [Romans 12:9] Christians, while commanded to teach and preach to the unbeliever (“Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel unto every creature” [Mark 16:15]); are then, when discerning impenitence, to disassociate (discriminate) themselves from the latter. "Evil companionships corrupt good morals" [I Corinthians 15:33]. “Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather even reprove them.” [Ephesians 5:11].

But the Bible also condemns judgment. Is this contradictory? No. Inspiration condemns judging without, or prior to, the deliberation of testimony and/or reliable evidence. Racism and other forms of prejudice have no basis in biblical fact (Inspired and Revealed right and wrong). Sin is not the exclusive province of any one race, gender, status, creed, etc. Hence without any basis in Biblical revelation, these latter practices are of men (i.e. Satan), not of God. The Bible warns, “Judge not that you be not judged” [Matthew 7:1]. The Bible here actually condemns pre-judging (from the Greek text).

Two last observations. Authorized and instructed to discriminate, all will answer at Judgment as to intent and action. Many will abuse that instruction. The fault lies, not with discrimination nor with the Word of God; but rather in the weakness, shortcomings, and sin of man.
