Frozen lakes not always safe (Norway)

Frozen lakes not always safe

It's winter holiday week in Norway, with most schools out of session and thousands flocking outdoors to enjoy winter sports. Experts warn, however, that unusual winter conditions mean the ice on frozen lakes may not be safe.

A lack of snow in the Oslo area has prompted many to turn to ice skating and even ice fishing, to get a taste of the great outdoors. They may be taking a risk.

The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Administration (NVE) reports that a lengthy period of mild weather last month means that lakes even at an altitude of 500 meters over sea level may not be covered with ice thick enough to support any weight. Some lakes don't have much ice on them at all.

That can be dangerous for skiers and hikers accustomed to trekking over them. NVE officials are warning people to avoid inlets and all areas where creeks and rivers flow into or out of the lakes. "Ice near land is, as a rule, more secure than ice in the middle of the lake," Randi Pytte Asvall of NVE told newspaper Aftenposten.

Ice conditions are especially precarious in eastern Norway, while even large lakes in the mountains demand caution. Pytte Asvall said the ice should be at least 10 to 15 centimeters thick before it's safe to venture over it.

Even though I live here in Nebraska, ice has never played much of a part in my own "life experiences"--had many of those, too many to count, but none in particular with ice.

About the only thing is, when I was a little kid (I do not come from an agricultural background, by the way), I saw a pig sliding on ice.

It was a good thing I was wearing brown pants.

Ping for the Norway ping list.

After the experience of this morning, I decided that while "pickup-trucks-in-the-lake" stories attract a great deal of attention, they do not necessarily attract attention towards Norway, our gallant allies in the war against terror.

That was a rather raucous, riotous thread.

So in this second half of the news from Norway, the Nebraska of Europe, I retreated to the back pages. (Nobody goes to "chat" on Free Republic, but I thought it a good idea to try it out.) I hope to put Norway back on the front page tomorrow (Wednesday).

All the outdoor ice skating I've done has been on the pre-made ponds, maximum depth of 2 feet. I do remember when I was younger that the NBC station out of DC would remind people not to skate on the Potomac.
I have to go check out this morning's Norway update.

On New Year's Eve I was trying to carry my girlfriend accross a puddle, which turned out to be a sheet of ice, I ended up slipping and breaking my fibia and tibia. They had to insert 10 screws and a metal rod to stablize it. Ice stories now have a unique place in my heart.

Well, like I said earlier, Madam, I was paying no attention to the "sex" angle of the story--"sex" stories do not "sell" Norway--concentrating more upon the fact that the guy had ruined a perfectly good truck.

Lol! I think the headline had something to do with it.

Yeah, sure, the headline probably did have something to do with attracting attention, but I was trying to ignore that aspect of it.

Norway is a serious matter, and here all these silly people were enticed by a silly headline.

If I had written the headline, I would have written STUPID IDIOT RUINS PERFECTLY GOOD PICKUP TRUCK.
