Publican jailed for hurling false eye at garda(Cop)

A publican who took out a false eye and threw it at a garda was sentenced to four months in jail yesterday.

Jimmy Grace (57), Main Street, Borrisokane, Co Tipperary, entered the local garda station in a drunken state at 1.05am on June 18 last year, Borrisokane District Court heard. He took out his false eye, placed it on the reception counter, and started roaring.

Supt Jim Fitzgerald said Mr Grace slammed his fist down on the counter and started bouncing his eye off it. He then threw the eye at Garda Dan Maher, thereby assaulting him. On the same date, he had gone into a businessman's premises in Borrisokane and caused a disturbance.

Supt Fitzgerald said the defendant had previously caused an injury to Garda Maher when he was armed with an iron bar and a screwdriver. He had received a 12-month jail sentence over that offence which was later suspended on appeal in the Circuit Court, on condition that the defendant paid compensation to Garda Maher.

Defending solicitor Tony O'Malley said Grace was pleading guilty to a Section Two assault and with engaging in threatening and abusive behaviour. He said his client lost the eye some years ago. There was some bad feeling between him and the gardai.

He had been drinking heavily after witnessing a work colleague being crushed to death on a building site, and he was stressed over his brother's sudden death and a High Court claim regarding his eye.

Judge Michael Reilly said the case was particularly serious due to the previous injury to the garda. He fixed recognisances of €250 and an independent surety of €750 in the event of an appeal

"He took out his false eye, placed it on the reception counter, and started roaring."

That's good Irish writing, that is.

Happy St. Patrick's day, and very sorry about the man who was crushed to death.

Clearly he was seeking retribution for wrongs incurred, hence the "eye for an eye".

I was the school marbles champion back in the 1950's. Used a large cat eye. I could have gone professional if I had a man eye.

I'd say the guy was stressed to the max, I wonder what the High Court claim regarding his eye was about?
