Lack of public knowledge in politics today
Opinion | 3/24/05 | Isaac19delta

Look around you, and listen to the people, what do you hear? Well, when the subject has anything to do with politics, such as the last presidential race, or what “politics” effect on the daily lives of people, some seem to be talking without any knowledge of what they are speaking. Whether you’re a conservative, liberal, moderate, or anything between, your opinions on policies may differ, but what matters the most is that you have the knowledge to disagree. This problem, as I like to call it, affects not only the younger crowd, but also adults of all ages. One may get their opinion from others opinions, such as a talk show hosts, or news commentators, which may be bias, or distorted to fit the political liking of the individual. Most intelligent people would prefer to do some research before opening up a subject, so that they are certain of what they speak. I run into folks everyday that seem to know very little about politics, past, or present, so when they bring the subject up, they only sound as if they are picking words out of the last 60 minutes program, or a Michael Moore film. This problem can be linked to many things, one in my opinion, that is the most concerning is the lack of education in this department at local schools. You would think in a free republic, which we live in, that a public school would educate the young about the workings of our free society, and all branches of government, so that when they are of age to vote for their leaders, they can make knowledgeable choices instead of looking for the opinions of others to vote for them. With technology today, many different extreme voices are easier heard than those of the saner crowd. You have the internet, and cable T.V. that allow many sources of information to come into your home, and that information cannot be sifted through without the knowledge to do so. And that is why the public schools need to further push the subject of political science, and offer more classes, in my opinion, one for every year starting from grade school on up to graduation. For your own test, just ask somebody around you if they are familiar with the branches of government, such things as, “ do you know what the House of Representatives is for?” and see what answer you get. Because a lot of people think that the President of the United States is the big wizard controlling everything, but this is not the Wizard Of Oz, but there is a big curtain behind what you see, and that my friends is politics. So my final question is this, do you think that the people you talk to that say, “ I’m not voting, because it don’t mean anything to me, or my vote don’t count” or those who say such things as, “I lost my job because President Bush is in office” would say those same things if they were properly educated? Ponder that, and see the real concern for proper schooling when the country is at stake.

A full and complete education,History,Literature,Civics and social Studies would provide the society with reasoning and literate adulats. what we have is an educational system that is indoctrination oriented. there in lies the problem.

Welcome to Free Republic.

You should post comments to existing threads for a while, sort of getting your feet wet and learning the ropes before posting a hated vanity thread.

That way people would get to know you and have a general idea of whether or not your personal opinions are worth spit or not.

I agree, most Americans are politically ignorant which accounts for such a low voter turnout.

No. Your right, for a great many it falls on the parents to try to educate the children, but that too will be slanted. But if its slants right, your half way there ;)

....and welcome to FR

You hit the nail on the head. I hear opinions based on ignorance all the time.

Lately I've heard opinions about the Terri S case. When I talk to these people I find that they know next to nothing about the case. I've considered carrying with me typewritten sheets of paper with some of these things.

The gerneral level of knowledge about currect events is pretty low. Have you heard Jay Leno or Shean Hannity "man on the street" interviews?

No, I haven't seen those.

I did however just finish Hannity's latest book, and found it to be a great read.
