Robert W. Shaffern, Assistant Professor of History, has been a member of the History Department since 1995. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1963. He received his bachelor of arts degree (magna cum laude from De Paul University in 1985, and his master of arts degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1987, where he stayed to complete his Ph. D. in medieval history, conferred in 1992. Professor Shaffern teaches medieval, ancient, and Byzantine history, as well as Renaissance and Reformation. Along with Professor Roy Domenico, he teaches a writing-intensive course, The Historian's Craft, which also examines historiographical schools and historical methods. Professor Shaffern's research interests lie in the religious and intellectual history of the Middle Ages, particularly the administration of pastoral care,canon law, and devotionalisms. He has conducted research at the Medieval Institute at Notre Dame, the Institute of Medieval Canon Law at the University of California, the Bodleian Library of Oxford University, and the British Library in London. He has published in a number of distinguished, refereed journals, such as Bulletin of Medieval Canon Law (I 991), Church History (1 992), Journal of Medieval History (1996), Diakonia (1998), and Catholic Historical Review(1998). Professor Shaffern has also presented papers based on his research at international academic conferences in the United States and the United Kingdom.
Professor Shaffern serves as moderator of the Mu-Rho chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the international honor society in history.
