I dont know you you NYs could survive without walmart. Heck there nothing better than going shopping at 1 am on friday night/saturday morning. I remember when we lived out in Washington it was target we shopped at. However ive lived in SC for ten years and thats one of the most frequent places we shop...

Heck when I went looking for furnature for my apartment, I spent 450 bucks at walmart getting what I needed.

If there's one thing NYers have never lacked, its shopping. We do pretty good for restaurants and museaums as well.

Back in the day, New York had Woolworth and EJ Korvettes for lowbrow shopping. Now the closest you have are the 99 cent stores operated by Al Qaeda supporters. NY is a great place for shopping if you have the bankroll of Mayor Bloomberg.

The best place to shop for clothes is RUGGED Wearhouse... I discovered them when I was in annapolis and it saved me a lot of money espically on a fixed income. The problem is that I have too many clothes especially for a guy.... My walk in closet is plum full.

Our daughter and son in law just moved to Powdersville, and love it. He works at the BMW plant near Greer, and was looking for something close. I will forward this thread to our daughter, and she could post lots of info on the area, including activities, realtors, etc. Welcome to SC!

"I now live in the North Side of the ATL metro area in a 6000 sq ft house with 7 bedrooms, 6 baths, on an acre of land, inground pool, professionally landscaped yard gourmet kitchen with granite countertops, custom cabinets which I bought a couple of years ago for $280K."

Wow. We live in Raleigh, NC and are FINALLY looking to buy a home here.....and it's very, VERY expensive. The house you've described would run seven figures here...easily.

Wish I could relocate to someplace where I could buy such a house at such a price. Are prices there still that reasonable?

I agree that Powdersville is a great place to live. We lived there up until the beginnning of last year. Although we moved, we still stayed in the Anderson District 1 school district (in Pelzer) since it won't be long until our son attends school. All the schools have rated excellent or good on the report card for several years in a row. But I believe you said schools aren't important. That still illustrates what a great area Powdersville is though. People are friendly and something must be right for every school to do that well.
Locally you are centered between Anderson and Greenville. Although, we're in Anderson County, we're only about 15 minutes from downtown Greenville. We bought our house in February last year. It is a two-story cape cod with three bedrooms, two full baths, .69 acre, and in a very good subdivision. We bought it for $110,500.
It is also a good tip to think about living in Anderson County, as the taxes seem to be cheaper, and commuting to work. You don't have to put up with much rush hour traffic, so commuting isn't too bad.
As far as things to do, there isn't much in that department. If you like bars, I suppose that may rate a B-, but if you're not into that stuff, you're stuck. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from, but not much in the recreation area. There are a couple of multi-cineplex theaters. Luckily, if you don't mind a little driving, you aren't far from the beaches in SC, the GA, TN, and NC mountains, Charlotte, NC, and Atlanta, GA.
In Greenville, there is Frankies Fun Park, with an arcade, putt-putt, go-carts, etc, many county parks, lakes that provide fishing, and other activities. There are several state parks close by that you can go camping and hiking at if you're the 'outdoorsy' type.
My husband and I enjoy taking small day trips around the area. Most of these are within 1-1.5 hours within Greenville. Some good choices are Chimney Rock/Lake Lure, NC (where the film "Dirty Dancing" was filmed). Here you can take boat tours around the lake, shop in the little mountain shops, eat from various restaurants and they even have their own little "beach" on the lake and a water park. You can rent boats yourself also. There is also a quiet trail to take a walk around the lake. This is a great place to take a picnic on a nice afternoon.
Also, Helen, GA is a cute place to visit for the day. This is a little "German town". I'm sure you can research this place for more info.
Augusta, GA is nice and they have a beautiful waterfront on the Savannah River.
Sorry, this is so long, but I thought I would let you know that you do have choices AROUND the area as to fun stuff to do. All in all, it's a very good place to live, unless you REALLY are into nightlife and BIG excitement! :)

One more thing, our realtor was Kasey Maddox out of Powdersville with Prudential C. Dan Joyner. She was a great realtor and even stayed with us until the late hours just to get stuff done. She devoted many hours just to us. If you need a realtor for the area, I would definately consider her. We probably wouldn't have even gotten our house if we hadn't found her. She found the guy to get it financed, referred us to appraisers, and was aggressive when getting the sellers to come down on the prices and getting exactly what we wanted!

Think "New Jersey", take away the great scenery and the friendly people, add oppressive heat, and there you are.

Thanks - I'll be working for a supplier to the BMW plant so I'll probably want to be close to the area.

Thanks for all the great info - The wifey and I play golf, workout, play NTN trivia (Bar) and go to a movie once in a very great while. We don't need a Manhattan style nightlife. Thanks again!
