I'm looking for information from South Carolina Freepers about the best places to live in the Greenvile, SC area. The job is a promotion and I'm leaning toward accepting it, but I don't know very much about South Carolina except that it is warmer than KC.
The wife and I play a lot of golf so we like the idea of warmer weather, but we are looking for a little insight into what the area is like. We probably don't want to spend more than 200k for a house and schools are not a factor. So any SC freepers your input is appreciated. Thanks from KC.

The weather was beautiful there. But at that time there was so much construction. We were also in the Simpson area. Or is it Simpsonville. Can' remember exactly. I'm sure if you're already leaning that way...hey, go for it! Follow the money! Sounds like you've already made up your mind!
I went to college in Greenville. I would pick it over KC in the blink of an eye.
Good weather. Great people.
Race relations excellent.
Lots of great churches.
You NEVER use the blinker on your car when making a turn in Greenville. The people who live there know where you're going and the people who don't have no business knowing.
You want to play golf? Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach are two of the world's golf mecca's. Greenville is loaded too.
But the best thing about Greenville is its proximity to Georgia.
Thanks for the info. How far (time) from Atlanta is Greenvile.
Greenville is only a couple of hours from Atlanta. Also, about 21/2 hours away from Greenville is the highest ski slope on the East coast. We go there every year and have a blast.

My brother in law has been looking for a job in our native state for a year. The competition is tough because of out of state applicants.
PS ;-)
I lived in Greenville for a couple of years....
It is a awesome small city....enough amenities, stores malls & resturaunts in town and 1.5 hours down the road is the Mall of Georgia, another 45 minutes and your in downtown Atlanta.
Housing prices will be a shock to most, homes are cheap here in the South. I now live in the North Side of the ATL metro area in a 6000 sq ft house with 7 bedrooms, 6 baths, on an acre of land, inground pool, professionally landscaped yard gourmet kitchen with granite countertops, custom cabinets which I bought a couple of years ago for $280K. I'm a bit fuzzy on current Greenvile prices but I imagine you will do well....
Charleston is a three hours away and so is Hilton Head. The mountains of North Carolina are within 1 hour (which include Indian Casino's). Snow Skiing is close....
If you like hiking and fishing this is some of the most beautiful country in the nation. BTW great lakes good for skiing 8 months of the year...
If that isn't enough, golf is one of the major pastimes in SC....The Master's just held in Augusta Georgia straddles the SC/GA border.
NeverGore
My sister's in Seneca. I didn't realize you were so close. Only........she seems to like it there!! : )
For real? Ask her. It's horrible. Only natives can put up with the heat, mosquitos and lack of golf. (hee hee!)
The only thing we don't like when we visit, is IT'S SO DANG HARD TO FIND YOUR WAY AROUND!! She lives out in the boonies, and the area is not gridded off, it winds and curves and I don't know what all, but that place is HARD to find!!
We have about a 1/2 acre of what I call swamp right next to our property. Surely you couldn't have more mosquitos....or frogs!!
However, if you are looking for excitement, its not the place to go. There is a small strip of bars and restaurants in downtown Greenville, but other than that, your life will revolve around Super Wal Mart. Not a place I would want to live, but you can do alot worse.
Hey KSCITYBOY,
Im glad to hear that your thinking about moving to Greenville. Its a nice city, my parents live to the SW of Greenville in Easley, SC. Another place I would Recommend is the Powdersville area this area has been growing briskly and is mostly new houses.
I dont know if you have kids or not but if your looking for a good school district I would Recommend Anderson District 1, where I went, since it has one of the best (Wren) high schools for the area. My dad is a teacher and gets all the info on all of the different districts.
Overall a great place to live.
Oh wow...Small world isn't it!? You're right on with your assessment. And I know that Wal Mart. When we were there, we went to Greenville and they have some kind of an outdoor kids thing. Was fantastic...All kinds of games and outside stuff. Water spray thing, kids boat, bumper cars...Can't remember the name of it! You can buy an all day ticket for like $10
Very true about house prices. My sponsor family in Annapolis lived in a two story house with a pool backed to a golf course. I think that they could sell their house for almost half a million, where as the same house in SC would probably go for 150-200K.
You probably drive as fast as me if you can get to atlanta in 2 hours. For the safe Driver, Columbia is Two hours away, Atlanta is about 2-3 depending on traffic, Charleston and Hilton head are closer to 4 hours. Yes I know the times to those two since I go down to beaufort sometimes when Im home.
Skiing up in banner elk is probably 3-4 hours away, most annoyingly is 2 hours of 2 lane roads.
I dont mind living there except my job kinda keeps me away from there.
Gota Love Walmart.. you should heard my parents when i went home... :like Lets goto the NEW super Walmart", never mind the "OLD" Walmart 1 mile from my house.
Im pretty spoiled were I live in flordia since I pass Super Walmart Every day going to the base and back home.
When I was in college we would all goto the mall and Walmart on the weekends bc it was the only thing to do.
There were NO Wal Marts in the New York Metropolitan area until one opened on Long Island last year. In the Southeast, they are ubiquitous. The one near where I lived in Miami was packed even at 1AM.
