The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - Review
cinemablend.com ^ | 4/28/2005 | Joshua Tyler

Posted on 04/28/2005 10:44:46 AM PDT by js1138

Starring: Martin Freeman, Sam Rockwell, Mos Def, Zooey Deschanel, Bill Nighy, Anna Chancellor, John Malkovich, Warwick Davis, Alan Rickman (voice), Stephen Fry (voice)

It opens with a perfectly choreographed dolphin musical number, and ends with the disembodied head of deceased author Douglas Adams. This is the long awaited adaptation of his novel, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” and as the dolphins flawlessly perform their rendition of “So Long and Thanks for All the Fish” you’ll realize you’re in for one hell of a ride. Don’t panic. It only gets a little weirder.

This is most encouraging.

My biggest disappointment is that they left out the "B" Ark storyline....

Get the Dove Audio versions of the books.

Read by Douglas Adams.

I have all 5 books on tape and occassionally cycle through them whilst driving to work.

you get his interpretation of the characters -- accents, inflection, etc.

So Jesus is referenced in the movie then.

They couldn't get the writer for that bit out of the bath...

"B" Ark storyline....

The B ark is my family's favorite inside joke. We say someone came over on the B ark. You probably know FReepers like that.

Don't know a thing about the movie or the author. What is the point of the movie, or is it basically a cartoon, good for some laughs?

The original books (there were ultimately 4 or 5 in the series) were quite funny science-fiction parodies. No deep social significance, apart from a bit of gentle satire (for example, the series begins with the earth being destroyed to make way for an interplanetary freeway). I don't know if the movie will be as good.

No, but he gets a nod in the preface.

"Almost, but not completely unlike..." [fill in the blank] is another great concept.

Thanks. I'm wanting to read whether it's kid-friendly.

I convinced my wife to go by explaining to her that they were spoofs and made fun of a lot of common themes in sci-fi. Her sci-fi exposure is limited to the prequel Star Wars movies. Or at least it was until we got married. She'd never seen the originals. a little at a time. I am hoping to be able to take her to see Enders Game, whenever/if that ever comes out.

Most of the humor will probably go right over a kid's head. They might be wowed by the special effects, though.

If it is anything like the book, it may be the first movie I have seen in several years.

So Jesus is referenced in the movie then.

From the book:

And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how nice it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small cafe in Rickmanworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything. Sadly, however, before she could get to a phone to tell any one about it, a terrible, stupid catastrophe occured, and the idea was lost for ever.

I've been hanging out at the Restaurant at the End of the Universe for years... The view is tremendous.

Glad they finally got around to putting Adams' work on the big screen.

Alan Rickman was an excellent pick for the voice of Marvin the Robot.

He's gonna be AWESOME!!

We're so excited about Serenity!! Our #1 son was home over Christmas and mentioned "Firefly". We'd never seen it, but got the DVDs from Netflix. What a great show!
