Favorite Conservative Movies?

Posted on 05/04/2005 2:51:42 PM PDT by rogermonroe

I'm a liberal but growing increasingly disenchanted with the left. I'm also a movie fan. I'm looking for a list of the movies most beloved by conservatives, movies that support conservative ideals, films that make a good argument for conservatism. I figured this was the place to go. If you were making such a list, what would be on it? Rambo? Red Dawn? What?

The African Queen was pretty good too. I watch it whenever it comes around.

Good choice - here's another vote for The African Queen!

"Nature, Mr. Allnut, is what were were put into this world to rise above."

My criteria: movie depicts courage and/or families positively, or are just fun, plus I never get tired of seeing them.

Oldies:

* On the Waterfront
* Notorious
* Friendly Persuasion
* How Green Was My Valley
* Best Years of Our Lives
* Red River (and some other westerns - I saw a lot of Audie Murphy and Jeff Chandler movies when I was a kid)
* Just about any musical, through the sixties
* Many WWII movies, especially the lesser know ones
* Scarlet Pimpernel (Leslie Howard version)
* Tale of Two Cities (Dirk Bogarde version)

Newbies:

* Master and Commander
* Incredibles
* Team America
* The Patriot

Why only movies? A lot of what the History Channel shows probably counts as conservative. "Band of Brothers" from HBO is probably the best thing you could watch. "Gettysburg" and "Andersonville" from TNT were also quite good.

Astronaut movies like "Apollo 13" or "The Right Stuff" might count as conservative movies, though some may have doubts about the latter. I don't know if "The Path to War" was conservative either, but seeing LBJ come undone will be gratifying to many on the right.

"True Grit".

The scene where John Wayne takes on the young Robert Duvall is classic.

"Fill yore hand, you son of a bitch!"

I think you mean Lean on Me. I can't think of the actor's name who played the lead! Ouch, he is a favorite of mine. I'd like him even if he turned out to be a flaming Julia Roberts-style lib.

Well if you want to get into anime movies, I would recommend "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie"; it is very original, with a great plot, great action, great voice acting, great character developement and great music.

In other words, it's everything Hollywood currently lacks.

Yes, but only before the want-a-free-handout forces of evil reverted to name calling: "Mighty bold talk for a one-eyed fat man!"

I'm glad I'm not alone in citing Brazil! I think it is a very coservative, or at least a very anti-liberal, movie. It illustrates so well what life in a jackboot nanny state is like.

Absolutely my favorite film ever. It even tops Holy Grail.

I haven't seen the Dirty Dozen. I don't know if it is really a Conservative movie but it is damn cool!

Also, you won't get a lot of Buchanan followers here. I respect the guy but he is what is know as a Paleo-Conservative. The isolationist aspect in the Conservative movement is all but dead.

This started with the ascendance of the Goldwater Conservatives and although the mainstream will tell you we are under the control of the Neo-Conservatives, this is not true. The Neo-Conservatives came over to US after the Left-Wing disillusioned them and would not stand up to communism like we would.

Hell, I'll second Cowboy Bebop!

Arioch7 out!

In no particular order. . .

Saving Private Ryan
The Patriot
We Were Soldiers
Red Dawn
Ben-Hur
The Searchers
Forrest Gump. . .

The list goes on and on.

I would have to say my all time favorite movie would be American History X. I think it teaches important lessons about baggage (racism or any other types)...
Strictly as a conservative, Left Behind 2 is great, because when Nicolae's face morphs into the devil, if you pause the screen at the right time, he looks like Tom Daschle. Seriously, rent the movie and check it out!

Thanks to all of you. Yes, it was Lean On Me. Great story and great movie. Even though Clark has moments when his execution of leadership had its problems, the overall theme of sucess by eliminating the cockroach criminal element could be applied to clean up our cities in the same way Clark cleaned up the high school.
