I had Timberlands just like these (sans the pink color) and they were indestructable -- I got many, many years of great use out of them in every kind of rugged clime you can imagine. Sadly, Timberland's build quality has declined over the years.
That said, these would not be acceptable as combat boots even if they were black.
I used to work on an island, where my feet were always wet and I loved Timberlands, but you are right the quality is on the rapid decline.
