It burns the same fuel oil as a house furnace. Clean and soot free. The original fuel was coal, but to burn that today we would have had to make physical changes to the boat that would have ruined its original operations. Fuel oil was just becoming the fuel of choice in those days, so our conversion to fuel oil is still accurate for the museum display.

When I was in New Orleans attending a Poetry Convention I took a trip on a Mississippi Paddle Wheeler. It was a dinner boat and it was was the Fourth of July. It was so cool, the fireworks display was on a huge barge on the river, too. Only thing that was hard to take was the heat and humidity. Oh, my hotel was in The French Quarter.
