Word For The Day, Wednesday, May 11, 2005 - glower
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | 05/11/2005 | The Janitor

Posted on 05/11/2005 5:59:06 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

glower \GLOW-er ("OW" as in "cow")\ verb

to look or stare with sullen annoyance or anger

Example sentence:
Mariah crossed her arms and glowered at Jeff, making it perfectly clear that she'd had enough of his teasing.

Did you know?
Do words of uncertain origin make you scowl? If so, "glower" may put a frown on your face, because only part of its history can be validated. The well-established part of its story leads us to Scotland, where "glower" (or "glowren," to use the older Scottish form of the word) has been used since the late Middle Ages. Originally, the word meant simply "to look intently" or "to stare in amazement," but by the late 1700s, glowering stares were being associated with anger instead of astonishment. Beyond that, however, the history of the word is murky. The most we can say is that "glower" is a distant relative of Middle Low German "gluren," which means "to be overcast," and of Middle Dutch "gloeren," meaning "to leer."

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

It was that, or send me to the mental health clinic! I didn't think it was going to bother me, but that evening, I was pretty sad. My oldest who's busy learning to live away from home didn't even bother to call.

But hubby did take me to see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but I didn't count that cause he was supposed to take me the weekend before, and I didn't get to do any of the things I wanted to do that weekend.

Guess what? I woke up to an inch of snow on the ground this morning...my garden is most unhappy, but I think the tulips will do ok...but my lilac bush is very sad.

i am finding as the kids get older, mothers day is sadder for me. i guess i liked the fussing that they do when they are small. xsbrownie is still wonderfully excited and tried very hard to make the day special. the 13 yo and 16 yo made me cards and said happy mothers day, but it is so different than when they were little and all excited. so i can imagine how you felt, i would have been sad also.

xsbrownie made a beaded bracelet at school for mothers day. i wore it on M Day but then forgot to put it on this week (for one thing it has a screw on clasp, which i can't do myself) and she was so disappointed yesterday that i had not worn it to work so this AM i had her put it on my wrist herself. it doesn't match a thing i own, but i will wear it every day : )

I am not very happy about it. My garden was looking so pretty, but in need of weeding. But we've been getting so much rain I was reluctant to walk in it.

And yesterday we saw a humming bird.

Yesterday I had lots of tulips blooming, lilac, horse chestnut, some stock that had self-seeded from last year, violets...and now I have white slush. It's supposed to turn into rain by mid day. It has been an incredibly wet spring here.

Why's the Hildabeast looking so dour?
There's no glow, there's no glimmer, just glower
The case of Peter Paul mounds
Adding scandals like pounds
No wonder her puss is so sour

If my daughter wasn't eavesdropping, I'd answer that in my usual inappropriate manner.

i just saw the thread and got very nervous as i realize i have three kids in three diff places to retrieve in case of an emergency. on 9/11, they are at least all together in one place. xshub is at Dulles and his flight was cancelled and he had no idea that anything was going on. he had no clue, no one at dulles appeared concerned.
