*New* The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Agreed. Bush would be more distraction than help. So Bush gets to hang out with Chirac, and the wimp from Spain, and talk about ~what~ exactly? Jeepers.

I like Blair, give him strength.

Heh, got an email from BJ Wexler! (OETA Movie Club host.) Apparently he stumbled on a comment I made on a FR thread concerning popcorn. That led him to check out my profile, which apparently led him to check out my Bug blog! Then he left a comment on my blog, which I then got as an email.

I am guessing he ran a search of his name and found the popcorn comment...in which case he'll eventually find this one!

"Hi Mr. Wexler!!!"

My horses doing good. I'm not. I'm a little envious. They went riding yesterday without me:')

Have a good day and watch those hurricanes! You very well could have one heading your way.

We've stopped Cyn from busting over the top of us at her stall gate, by blocking her and making her wait a few moments... but Bud sounds more severe.... I bet after you make him wait he'd still bust through, right?

Is he running to get to a stall?

First I'd try, (and you may have done this), open his pasture first, so he isn't in a race with the others. May take him a while to figure out, but it might slow him down.

Or, I'd leave him there to feed him,,,but,,,feed all the others first, and not feed him till he is standing quiet if he's freaking out at the gate waiting his turn.

Other then that, I wouldn't know what to do other then halter him.

Yes! What you describe is what I've been trying. It just makes him more frustrated. Last night he was bouncing around at the gate when I walked out there so I turned around and walked away. He took off, running and bucking and farting.

That's why I'd let him go first and by himself. Sometimes I think they feed on each others excitment and turn things into races.

"Is he running to get to a stall?"

Now this is what's weird, when he first starting doing this, he would fly through the gate and take off somewheres else, running all over tarnation. Since I separated him, he runs to his stall. When he was pastured with the other horses, taking off running all over the place, the other horses followed him.

I think I will leave him there to feed him, when he's standing quietly. If I do that a few times, it might do the trick!

"That's why I'd let him go first and by himself."

I'm afraid to do that. He's the herd leader and when he takes off, the others want to do the same. Tuffy and Winnie would go berserko if I did that.

Is OO Mr. Wexler?

If so, hello, when my children were young we watched the movie club every Sat night:). They knew who you were and looked forward to the program:) Thanks for a lot of good memories. They still get excited and call me when they see reruns of some of the old movies they saw first on your program.

Well then I'd either make them stand till they are calm after they see him go, or, and the easiest solution, leave him in the pasture to feed.

Back to basics....halter, lead rope with chain, whoa. He needs to relearn, who is in charge.

Perhaps you can put a chain over his nose? Give it a couple of quick jerks before you lead him out of there, and that will get his attention. Does he explode out of the gate only when it's time to eat, or all the time?

He's the one you don't otherwise handle much right? So he's getting a free ride? Could be some regular, manners-oriented ground work would help. In fact, if you caught him at the gate each night, and instead of feeding, tie him, put the others in but don't feed yet (hearing the feed pan noises might be more than he could take) and lunge him a few minutes, making him go slow, and really demanding perfect behavior, I mean chain under his chin and the works. That you might knock his ego down a notch or two. When he's good, then lead him in and feed everyone. The routine as it is has him over-excited. Changing the routine to something else might help.

We did some of that with Cyn.
