The word "God"
July 2, 2005 | self / vanity

You all read about that girl down in southern California who got an F on her final term paper because she used the word "God" in a term paper about religion which her teacher has assigned the students to write?

He had warned them not to use that word.

The town is just east of Los Angeles. I want to call it Velveeta, but it probably isn't exactly that.

Yes.

Do you have a follow-up question, or was that it?

You probably want to call a lot of things Velveeta.

I have no idea what the point of this thread is either. I guess it's a "vanity post" in the sense of Ecclesiasties: "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity . . . "

In other news, did you read about Sandra Day O'Connor's retirement from the Supreme Court in that city . . . heck, I want to call it Cheez Whiz, but that's probably not it. Oh, yeah -- Washington.

It doesn’t sound so much as if the teacher is anti-religious as trying to get the students to actually think. With the instructions (He had warned them not to use that word) to write a paper on religion without the word “God” the student would be forced to actually think of what religion is, without simply regurgitating what they have heard.
One of the most difficult courses I had in school was taught by a professor who detested unbounded verbosity. He always demanded that term paper be limited to 500 words or less. It would have been easier to write a 5,000 word paper. It forced us to actually think. It also eliminated the “If you can’t blind them with brilliance, baffle them with BS” style of writing.

Oh, that guy. I want to call him Reddi Whip, but I think that name is a registered trademark.
