The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

I know what that feels like! It's with some sadness that we cleaned all our saddles and gear out of the trailer last weekend. I don't know when we'll go again, but the saddles couldn't stay out there, they'll mold.

It may be. He is trying to get his horse to a vet, but he has to rely on somebody else who has a trailer that the horse can step into without stepping high. I haven't asked him the mare's history of her feet or anything because I can't make a diagnosis and I don't want him to think I am trying to do that, or implying that he isn't feeding his horse well or anything like that.

And Ruthy isn't on my list, I see... It's not a complete list at all! Some that used to be around more have gone off wandering.

I wonder how Mommadoo and family is doing with that major rebuild, and if she'll ever come back to the forum!

Eeek. If the horse is suffering from laminitis, he can't ~wait~ around, it needs treated or she'll be lame permanently. Most vets do farm calls... or does he need to get in where there is an x-ray?

He probably wouldn't be offended if you just said, in passing, "is the mare on a biotin supplement?"

If the horse is deficient on biotin, it will help hoof growth. At any rate, it won't hurt anything and is worth a try.

Have you ever heard of horses that get 'hot' on biotin? Bob has a theory that it made his horse hyper.

I am not sure. All I know is that he wants her to see a vet. He told me that a vet was out there before and he is the one that said she had laminitis, but that is all the vet said. He has had a farrier out there to put on different shoes. He DOES need an x-ray. I don't know if he has considered that. I will ask him tonight.

No, I haven't ever heard of that. There's nothing in biotin that would cause a horse to get 'hot' that I'm aware of.

I don't know... If he's had a vet out, it's possible the vet has told him things that explain it that your boss is just relaying part of... Lots of things cause laminitis, from feed to medicine to illness to injury. If there's an issue with hoof growth, that just makes it worse. It sounds like a bad scene regardless.

Well, it might just an 'old cowboy' tale. He brought it up once when Bay was all on the muscle. Bay gets a joint supplement, and he asked if it had biotin in it.

You need another paint mare. It's not a good picture, but this is a really pretty draft mare.

...I feel like I should have at least tried but I just didn't know what to do and didn't want either one of us hurt but now I'm made at myself and thinking I should have just done it...

Well, I think you did the right thing by not trying it. Working on a problem with tight places and boogery things in a safe environment is one thing, but working on them between an electric fence and a potential leg-cutting object is quite another. If you want to work on desensitizing her to the golf cart, do it out in the wide open spaces first. Then when she's ok with that, you can move on to tighter quarters. Better safe than sorry is my motto. Good decision!

Is it possible that the mare had an injury that stopped the hoof growth? An injury can also sometimes cause laminitis. Did a farrier confirm laminitis also? And painting the hoofs with one of the hoof dressings might help the growth issue. Is there heat in the foot or the leg? I read your post further down saying she is overweight, that too can cause problems. It's really hard to tell but I do think a vet check again and x-rays would be a good idea. Hope it works out okay.

Becky has a list on her "about" page, that I copied. That should be up-to-date. It's up to you guys, if you want me too. It's not a bother at all.

Just click on my name and go to the last/biggest group of names on my home page. That's the ping list that wanted morning pings.
