The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I've read three of his books...loved them all. It's been a while though and I would love to pick one up again...too much to do.

Yeah, what Corin said. Either come right out and tell them you aren't going, or go and be honest about it. I think the relationship could survive blowing off this conference, but lying would be really bad.

All things considered they weren't very, um, diplomatic, were they?

Hmmm... Well, you know me... I will avoid confrontation too often too. Especially when its important.

It's the *thought* that counts, somehow.

While fibbing about attending the conference may not be the best solution, whatever excuses are offered for not attending should be accompanied by thanks for the very thoughtful gift and the good intentions behind it. Sincere or not.

Like they say... if you can't say something nice, at least have the decency to be vague. :-)

Well, thanks for the advice everyone. After mulling it over for a few hours, we've come to a couple firm decisions.

First of all, we have absolutely no desire to go, so we're not. And we are not going to pretend or claim we are. Lying certainly would not help the situation at all.

Also, I'm not going to continue to feel guilty for "wasting" the cost of their gift. Once a gift is given, it becomes our choice to use it or lose it.

As for how to tell them we aren't using it, well, that is still TBD. It will undoubtedly come up again at some point. Our decision is whether to be proactive or reactive.

Heh, I think we're a lot alike in that respect.

Heh...I'm thinking if it were me (or my Dad, who I resemble), I'd just let it expire and not say anything.

Then when it gets brought up down the line...preferably wayyyy down the line...well...I guess it can be addressed. But it's still rough, no matter how ya look at it.

Hair and ecurbh here with an ethical dilemma we've put off far too long.

call me crazy, but I say go... you just might learn something, and grow closer as a couple... you have nothing to lose... it'll clear your conscience, and get his folks off'n yer back...

that said, if'n you don't go, I'll still respect yuh...

Well...I gots me an interview outfit.

First off I went to Penneys and such on my own and didn't get anything...mostly because I went to Foley's just on the off chance they might have a better selection. I dunno much about Foley's, but the way the store HERE is set up, it's all mirrors and twists and turns and a hugh perfume section, and after a very short time I was literally feeling dizzy and confused and headachy, but it took me awhile to find the way out of the place. Nerve-wracking!

So I went and got a small Blizzard at Dairy Queen and went back home instead. Oops.

When Jen got home she took me back and cruelly forced me to try stuff on. ;-) After much vacillation, I got a sorta loose-fitting light teal blouse and black trousers. Also earrings that go with the silver buttons on the blouse. Oh, and some very low-heeled black pumps - just Hush Puppies. They were on sale, and I've had those before and know I can walk in 'em. Barely have a heel, but it's a good compromise between flats and anything more, and I'll actually wear them for church and all 'cause they aren't ridiculously uncomfortable and ungainly. My last pair held up well, too...until the right shoe got mislaid during a move. *sigh*

I still feel funny, mostly 'cause I've never worn dress pants. When I dress up, I wear dresses. Wearing pants and a blouse just seems casual. But Jen tells me this is more professional looking than something more frilly would be, and that seemed to be what you folkses were sayin', too.

Heh...I'm a hick, I dunno about these things. I interviewed for my last job in a plaid flannel jumper and a turtleneck and penny-loafers. Likely woulda looked silly anywhere but there! Now I'm kinda sorta in the city, it's different. At least everything I got was on sale and can be used again.

I am *going* to get this job. I've gotta now.
