The Hobbit Hole XXIV - Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...
Please see our Hobbit Hole Troop Support project blog! ^

Posted on 08/24/2005 9:50:25 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sand and Stone and Pool and Dell...

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

I was "interviewed" tonight for a couple of hours, by a group of students from Seattle U. for their MBA class. One of the people in the group is in our company, so she got them to pick me as their subject. It's a class on IT management, and their group project had a component where they needed to interview a "real-life" IT manager.

What's wierd about it is that about ten years ago I was in the MBA program at Seattle U... and took the same class... from the same professor...

I can't imagine that much I have to say is all that valuable, but it was fun. My approach to things is often... unorthodox... so I'm curious to see their presentation to see what they took away from this. hehehe... could be disturbing.

...and by the way... no, I didn't finish the MBA. I did about two thirds of it, got a lot out of it and did very well, but got promoted to manager and started remodeling the house. In the daily schedule, something had to go...

But this was an odd evening.

Ack... and I misspelled it too. I always get that one wrong.

Probably not... it was ten years ago. But I told them that I've been harboring a huge guilt because I borrowed and neglected to return one the professor's books back then.

I was supposed to work with her on a research project on Software-based Neural Networks... for publication and everything... very cool project, and an honor to be asked to do it. But that was right about the time I had to quit the program... and never returned the book and software that we were gonna start the project with. It's been nagging at me for all these years to now.

I really regret not getting to do that. Keep in mind that this was about 1995/96... and "virtual" neural networks was a really cutting-edge concept back then. Still is, in lots of ways.

I see people have been talkin' about me this evenin'...don't think I'll easily forget.

Back from the game. We lost 50-0. But, in fine parental form, I can point out that when he finally put the 2nd string in (Jr's been moved to offensive line) with 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter, they had their best drive of the night. I'm just sayin'.

Still, it was a nice homecoming.

I thought the postgame fight and gunshot in the parking lot gave a particular zing, so to speak, to the ambiance.

It wasn't the best way to leave a football game.

Actually, I can't swear it was a shot and not a firecracker. My brother and I were still a good distance away. Jr. was in the locker room and said some guys started to leave and ran back in saying there was a gunshot.

All we caught on local news was that there was a fight and some students (the other school) and some non-students (about 8) were in custody.

The place was crawling with police and more were on the way as we were leaving. Hopefully we'll know more tomorrow.

I'm signing off. I picked up HHGTTG at Blockbuster. I'm going to go sleep through it on the couch...just because I can...

g'nite

Forgive me but I'm disposed to expound on this for a moment... seems like I have to do my nightly expounding on some topic. So tonight... it's this.

Neural networks. Based on the basically flawed concept that computers are some kind of model of the human brain. They're not. Not even close. Mainly because computers still have to divide processing and storage into separate functions and places.

Neurons, on the other hand, are at once both a processor and storage. Neurons store information (nobody knows how) and they also work as a massively parallel cluster of processors. Nobody seems to know if they can only do one or the other or if they can do both.

A neural network tries to virtualize the neuron as a software object, and blur the distinction between processing and storage. It's a real mind-purge, if you think about it for too long. :-)

Yikes...

Generally speaking... if people sit and wonder whether it was a gunshot or a firecracker... it was probably a firecracker. Gunshots are unmistakable, for the folk that have heard lots of them.

But damn... 50-0? Yowsers.

We lost 50-0.

Well that's just crappy for Homecoming! Did they have the dance right after the game? That's what we always did, though the Homecoming Court was announced AT the game.

My cousin, Barbara, was on the Homecoming Court (one of three girls) when we were in the 9th grade. We were in a Jr. High, Grades 7-9, and that year was our only one in the school. We'd gone to Catholic School up through the 8th grade. She did well for folks only having known her for 2 months before they voted!

An email from a Soldier's mom:

<------->

Brian received your knife and was so very excited to get it. He showed it to everyone and is so proud of it.

Thank you so much for this service to our troops. I plan on making a donation to the Hobbit Hole.

Brian was home for 3 weeks and just left Southern California today for [redacted]. He is looking forward to what is next for him - either the [redacted] or [redacted]. He decided not to go the EOD route.

Again, thank you for the knife and for this service you provide for the soldiers.

Sincerely,

Marian C

Proud mom of PFC Brian C

GOOD MORNING!

Apparently the contractors haven't quite finished with the new Hole. Some groundwater seepage issue in the third pantry, and theres a HUGH boulder right where the left-hand corridor is suppoed to branch off to the handball courts and guest rooms. There may be blasting.

I'm assured these issues will all be cleared up in time for Afternoon Tea, but we may have to picnic for Elevenses...hope for good weather :)

When you're all done packing, put everything you can't carry to the new Hole in the pickup out front, and feel free to use the dumpster for any one-armed transformers, maneless my little ponies and gay spidermen you may find behind the sofas.

Yeah, I figure it probably was. News didn't say anything about gunfire and there was nothing in the paper. We were still inside on the other side of the buildings.

Suzi, the dance is tonight.

Can we safely assume you'll be bringing the rest of the mushrooms?
