Okay, I can't stand it anymore. I joined FreeRepublic.com in May, 2005. I still have the new guy stigma. But since I've been here, no one has shown me how to post pics. Someone once said to go to tinypic.com, but that's not good enough.
Now, let's just pretend I'm a complete computer idiot. Actually, we don't have to pretend, because that's the case. Someone please give me thorough, exact, step-by-step instructions. Say I want to post a picture of my dog in my homepage. Where do I go? What do I do? What buttons do I click? I would greatly appreciate this.

Then there's this.
Ping, so I can figure it out, too
I can sympathize. I have been a freeper a little over a year and I still need step by step instructions. Good luck and welcome to Free Republic.
< img src="whatevertheURL" > You have to use the open and close brackets as well as quotes around the address (without spaces - I used them here so you could see the brackets). When you hit the Preview button, there will be your picture so you can see it before you hit the Post button.
The HTML Sandbox will help a lot.
Welcome to FR!
'newbie' stigma? Ouch.
Better Put some ice on it. :)
Welcome to FR.

Test
I did something wrong.
So, you will have to have the picture hosted on the net on a site that allows others to access it.
Then, you have to know the address of the picture itself on that server.
For example, I have a picture of myself shooting my FAL rifle on my site, that site is located on a server and the address of that picture is:
http://www.freewebs.com/jeffhead/jlhfal.jpg
In order to post it on this thread here, I would have to use the html code to post a picture which is: <img src="(the address of the picture)">. In this case, that would look like this:
<img src="http://www.freewebs.com/jeffhead/jlhfal.jpg">
Now, when I actually do that in my post on the thread, it produces this:
If you are out surfing the web and see a picture you like, you can usually right click on the pciture and then select properties from the pop up menu and see the address of the picture. Try it on my picture above. If you cut that address, and then paste it in a thread on FR using the html syntax I showed above, you can display that picture in your thread.
Hope that helps.
don't put a space between the brackets and the quotes
I also didn't have the correct URL.
Thanks!
WARNING! Some websites object to people linking to their photos and some object to you using them at all, even if you copy and host them yourself.
Some websites will even substitute the picture you thought you linked to with a notice that you are stealing their bandwidth. Others have been known to substitute porn in place of the image you think you're linking to.
Best to host the pictures you are posting on your own website
Bravo! And behold, another pic of the Grieving Mother Sheehan!
True. I've posted thousands of pictures over the years and only had one turn up with a tsk-tsk replacement. Most sites that don't want you to use their photos will say so somewhere on the site, and of course copyrighted images are certainly off-limits. Don't want to get FR into trouble, don't ya know.
1. Go to PhotoBucket and register for a free account http://www.photobucket.com/
2. When you're in your album, under Add Pictures, there is a place to click if the photo you want to place is somewhere on the internet, or there is a Browse button if the picture is somewhere on your own computer.
3. Hit the Submit button to upload the picture to your PhotoBucket account, and look at it. There are 3 boxes under the picture with coding in them. Pick the middle one (the one that starts with "img", highlight it and copy it (edit-->copy)
4. Come over here to FreeRepublic, open your reply window, and paste it in (edit-->paste)
5. Preview it (remember, preview is our friend) Voila - it should appear like magic!
Here's my latest one:
