Note the whole focus of the article is "could you believe it? A republican?". Not what his positions are on issues. Not why he voted for or against a candidate.
Frankly his politics shouldn't even be an issue, but at least he's smart enough to not abuse his position in the limelight to hijack the stage and spout off on his own politics. A class act in his old age.
This isn't news to me, either, but I didn't know that his conservativism went back to Reagan. Maybe this is another contributing factor to why Roger Ebert hates Blue Velvet.

Dennis is a great actor! As a Republican in Hollywood, he is not alone. Others include Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Heather Locklear, Shannen Doherty, Sarah Michelle Geller, Bruce Willis, etc., etc.
