When I was, uh, much younger, I read a story about eating mammoth. There was some kind of convention, or other meeting, or perhaps it was just a large hotel needing to feed its guests; the locals were sent out to get some fresh meat, and they came back with large beefy looking meat which roasted up nicely. It was tasty, and unlike anything anyone had eaten before. When the locals took someone out to look at it, they found it was a slightly thawed but otherwise quite fresh mammoth. :') Might have been in Siberia, or then again, maybe in Alaska.
