Shannon Stapleton / Reuters Talk-show host Oprah Winfrey views the flood-ravaged Ninth Ward in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans on Sunday.

Dr. Phil McGraw paid a visit Sunday afternoon to Katrina evacuees at the Astrodome.

There he consoled the thousands of evacuees with words of advice at an impromptu "town meeting." The meeting was taped for airing on a future edition of Dr. Phil.

Oprah Winfrey will be in Houston on Tuesday, also to tape a future show, according to one Reliant Center official.

Ellen DeGeneres, a former New Orleans resident, was also expected to address Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath on Tuesday, when The Ellen DeGeneres Show returns from summer hiatus.

I hope these entertainers will encourage assistance and offer hope and steer clear of making political hits.

How much is Oprah contributing of her vast fortune?

Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks From correspondents in New Orleans 05sep05

EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.

The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

I hope so, too. I think it's the last thing these poor people need to hear right now. We've already got more than enough hot air flowing from the Windy City with Jesse and the Beltway with the Black Caucus, Gary Ackerman, and a few more assorted fruit roll ups from Tinseltown.

I know.

Taking political pot shots for their own self-interests is so revolting.

I think they tend to stay away from being divisive.

They are getting more great ideas for their shows and more adulation. You can bet that Oprah is going to play the race card....after all, none of these black refugees would be admitted to a NY boutique either!

Oprah..the ultimate " don't you know who I am?"

He made sure to bring his own photographer so people could know the "good works" he is doing.

Did he ever actually get this boat afloat and aid anyone?

I knew it was only a matter of time before Oprah arrived. She must be ticked that Phil (who reportedly wants to buy out the remainder of his contract with Oprah's Harpo Studios) beat her to the punch, but she'll probably make up for that by upstaging him by flashing her monetary largesse for a selected few. Maybe new pontoon boats for everyone in the audience, or something.

I would have been more impressed with Sean Penn's visit if it didn't stink of a photo-op to be used to bludgeon Bush. As we all know, Penn takes himself WAY too seriously, with the assistance of the San Francisco Chronicle.

BTW, I thought he was a vastly overrated actor before he started opening his trap politically. I can't believe he got an Oscar nom for I Am Sam, but then again, I think it's too easy to play those kind of characters. Can anyone really say, "I didn't buy that actor as being mentally disabled. He seemed too...un-retarded."
