Time is running out for Mousie the mouse who, tied to two birthday balloons, was last seen soaring helplessly over the Berkeley hills toward points east.
Mousie has been gone for a week now. Mousie's owner, an 11-year-old girl who tied him to the balloons in the first place, is as distraught as an 11-year-old girl can be.
"It's a tragedy,'' said Caroline Nielsen. "I feel terrible. It should never have happened. Mousie is a member of the family.''

I'm an old softy grampa of 4 but somehow this story still makes me barf. "This whole thing is a tragedy,'' Caroline said. "I know it's not a real mouse." GMAFB

A perfect example of a good liberal education. The laws of physics still apply; even in San Fran.
I bet she has a better understanding of physics now and so does mousie.
p.s. Lucky for the rodent, she was headed East or swimming might be an real tough option.

Believe me, I know what it's like to have a little girl upset over something like that. But I've never yet called a newspaper to have her made into a victim.

Mousie probably ended up in a house of ill repute . . . I don't think it was a tit mouse.

Must be a very dull day at the Gate's news desk.
I can just hear it now. "Bush's been bashed, El Sheehan's been covered, - - what's an editor gonna do?"
Well look at this! How wonderful, a self-centered pre-teen with a "tragedy" to share with our readers.
And it's sure to boost sales in the barf bag company I own stock in, said the editor to himself. ;-)

Well, I am surprised no animal cruelty charges have been filed against the kiddo --- this is CA isn't it?

...partly to find out how many balloons it takes to float a mouse. And now she knows. So she lost Mousie and learned a valuable life lesson. You don't put the things you love at risk or you might lose them.
I approve of learning this lesson with a stuffed mouse at age 11 rather then with a little baby at age 21.

The whole family needs therapy.
And the Chronicle needs a new editor. How many actual news stories have been ignored so that drivel like this can be printed?

Chalk it up as a learning experience for the little girl. None of my rodent pets lasted very long when I kid either.
