Sea Lions Sink Boat In Newport Harbor

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) A group of raucous sea lions are on the agenda of the Newport Harbor Commission hearing today.

Officials are looking for ways to drive away the animals that's causing mayhem ever since they showed up in the harbor in May.

Residents say they bark all night long, and the city received a report that a rogue sea lion tipped over a mother and her child in their kayak.

One recent weekend, about 15 hefty sea lions managed to sink a 50-foot sailboat and owner Jerry Dunlap had to pay $3,500 to have it dragged up.

To protect themselves, some boat owners have strung barricades made of wire and milk carton around their crafts. Harbor officials are considering using underwater firecrackers, predator sounds, scarecrows and hiring a "sea lion shooer" to walk around banging a stick on the docks to disturb them.

Are you sure these sea lions are not from the French Quarter ?

Better get rid of them now. If they stay long enough, the ecofascists will go to court and claim they are protected and Newport Harbor must be declared a refuge for them. Especially since N.B. is one of the wealthiest places in Republican Orange County.

I, for one, welcome the reign of our Sea-Lion Masters!

(Simpsons-related joke for those of you who can't get it.)

Today he'd probably do more time than a rapist or maybe even a murder

Actually it was seals that Grandpa used to shoot.
Remember when a bunch of sea lions had been herded into Newport Bay(OR) by a pod of killer whales then slaughtered by said whales right in front of Mo's Restaurant? All the animal rights wackos in town didn't know who to root for!

Similar problem in areas of San Francisco bay. Pier 39 stinks to high heaven when the wind is right; piers and watercraft have been damaged as well.

Seals and sea lions are protected out here... even when they're chomping a salmon you just caught in half!
