No day at the beach: Love sues Wilson

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Mike Love is suing his cousin and former Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson, but Love's lawyer hopes the lawsuit won't mar their good vibrations.

Love filed the lawsuit in federal court Thursday accusing Wilson of promoting his 2004 album, "Smile," in a manner that "shamelessly misappropriated Mike Love's songs, likeness and the Beach Boys trademark, as well as the 'Smile' album itself."

I know the Beach Boys love to sue each other, but this lawsuit goes too far. Mike Love didn't write any songs for SMiLE, and wrote exactly eight words for "Good Vibrations." Brian Wilson sold a bunch of records, hit the top 20, and won a Grammy thanks to SMiLE. It takes a small man to sue your own kin out of jealousy...

Brian Wilson is still alive? Isn't his brain fried from LSD or something?

Brian Wilson still tours regularly. He is definitely getting instructions from a very distant planet, but he still makes appearances. It does seem like the various Beach Boy factions regularly take each other to court. I prefer to remember them from their "I Get Around" and "Fun Fun Fun" days. They were wonderful.

The dead Boys are lucky to be dead, or else they'd be suing one another and being sued by the live ones. Speaking of the Dead Boys:

He's still around, though a bit sad to watch.
I think he suffered from severe depression and had electro shock therapy and that may have affected him. Seems I remember hearing about a particular disorder he suffers from now, but I can't recall the name of it.

Love has made a habit of this. It's not the first time. Brian Wilson has previously paid Love millions to get him off his back. Now he's back again.

Love already has the exclusive right to use the "Beach Boys" name for the purposes of live performances and recording. In practice that means him and Bruce Johnston and any backup musos. Big deal.

Maybe he has big alimony and child support obligations. Alternatively (and much more likely) he's simply a jealous, avaricious leech.

He was wrongly given many prescription drugs in the '70s & '80s in an attempt to cure his drug addiction. His "doctor" tried to take over his life, even writing himself into BW's will. BW's family sued the doctor, got his medical license revoked, and BW has been slowly recovering under the care of "real" doctors ever since. In the last seven years or so he's been touring regularly, overcoming his stage fright, and finished the long-discarded SMiLE album. He's not back 100%, but he's certainly doing better now personally and professionally than he has in forty years.

Mike Love is playing county fairs with a bunch of sidemen and calling them "The Beach Boys."

Mike Love has been a "playa" for a while. I've lost count of his marriages and kids (one of whom married Cousin Dennis briefly). I'm sure alimony isn't cheap when you're a rock star.

Alternatively (and much more likely) he's simply a jealous, avaricious leech.

There have been other, less kind things said about Mike Love over the years.

I beleive he suffered from severe mental illness. But seems to have recovered.

"They were wonderful."

Yeah. I loved in CA for a bit (mid 80s). In the "summerz' (if I can use that term about a place with no seasons) the Beach Boys were on the radio all day long. I liked it.

They'll probably meet some "Surfer Girl" in "The Warmth Of The Sun" and be singing "We're Together Again" in no time.

The real nice thing is, when you become mentally ill due to problems in your life, we can all bring it to everyone's attention. Woo hoo!

As you know, Mike is properly credited for "Good Vibrations" on the "Smile" CD. I guess he's now trying to get some credit for the songs he is documented to have made fun of when "Smile" was first presented to the Boys.

I doubt he'll succeed in that.

Wow wasn't Brian pretty much the creative guy behind things? With a little collaboration/help from Jan of Jan & Dean?

Brian was ALWAYS the creative guy. Mike provided some damned good lyrics early on. Jan and Dean were hangers-on-and-out in the Beach Boys' sphere, and Jan was a bigtime creative force until his accident. Those years were way creative, and way cool...
