Triumph the Dog to Perform on TBS Special
Yahoo! News (c/o Associate Press) ^ | 11/17/2005 | Associate Press

Triumph the Insult Comic Dog doesn't just bark out zingers and smoke cigars he worries about global warming. So the R-rated hand puppet will be one of the performers for TBS' two-hour "Earth to America" special 8 p.m. EST Sunday.

Robert Smigel, the heavy hand up Triumph's behind, recently talked to The Associated Press in character, explaining that this isn't the first time he's been politically active. He says he's also very passionate about "declaring cats second-class citizens."

Organized by Larry David's wife, Laurie David, the program will also feature Will Ferrell, Steve Martin, Tom Hanks, Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robin Williams and Leonardo DiCaprio among others.

The special is being taped in Las Vegas, which is also the home to a big comedy festival this weekend.

Smigel, 45, has distinguished himself among his comic brethren with not just Triumph (a character born on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien") but with his "TV Fun House" cartoons on "Saturday Night Live."

Smigel's (and Triumph's) shining moment, however, was likely outside the Ziegfeld Theater in New York before the release of "Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones" in 2002. His berating of the fans still reverberates.

Even now, Triumph says, "When the nerds see me, they go running."

Another opportunity for celebrities to tell us what to do. They wonder why their movie sales continue to plummet.

If this is live they are asking for trouble with having Triumph on the show...

I don't know; I think his performace during the MJ trial was superb! It is sad to see him being used for this, however.

I remember his humble beginnings when he was covering the Westminister Dog Show. He got kicked out and banned, so the next year he sneaked in wearing a Geraldo mustache as a disguise. Hilarious.

I thought his post-debate performance in the spin room last year was a riot, but the Stars Wars nerds thing is a classic. Worth taking the ten minutes to see it (again): http://www.stfunoob.com/movies/starwarsnerds.wmv

I have seen this thing at least 20 to 30 times. My opinion is that this is by far the funniest thing on the Internet. When I have a crappy day at work I watch this and will have a smile on my face for the rest of the night. The best part in when Triumph is talking to the Darth Vader guy and the few girls that are there. This is absolutely priceless.
