Mozilla to release Firefox 1.5 Tuesday

After a host of test releases and one false start, a new version of the Firefox browser will be ready on Tuesday, according to a media alert issued by the Mozilla Foundation on Monday.

Firefox 1.5 will be available for free on Tuesday afternoon, U.S. Pacific Standard Time, at www.getfirefox.com and www.mozilla.com, according to the open-source group. A complete press release outlining the new features in Firefox 1.5, as well as some additional Mozilla news, will be issued at the time the new version is available.

New features in Firefox 1.5 include a better system for updating software, faster navigation using the “Back” and “Forward” tabs, and a redesigned Options/Preferences window that increases the number of category icons and moves them from the left side of the window to the top.

Firefox 1.5 also includes new support for Web standards, adding support for Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), JavaScript 1.6 and new versions of CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). SVG is a language based on XML (Extensible Markup Language) for writing sophisticated two-dimensional graphics, and JavaScript 1.6 is the latest version of the scripting language. CSS is a W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standard for adding style elements, such as fonts, colors and spacing, to Web documents

In addition, the Firefox update adds better pop-up blocking and a host of security enhancements, according to Mozilla. Other new features include the addition of Answers.com to Firefox’s list of search engines and a Clear Private Data function that allows users to quickly remove personal data through a menu item or keyboard shortcut.

Firefox, which celebrated its one-year anniversary Nov. 9, has become a popular alternative to Microsoft Corp.’s Internet Explorer browser. Last month, downloads of Firefox topped 100 million.

Why is this necessary?

B.I.W.
Because It's Windows.

It's got nothing to do with open source. Windows crashes. Fact of life.
Sometimes it blue screens and tells you it has halted the system because of a corrupt driver. Nothing to do with Firefox.
Open programs and files are affected when this happens. Only a fool doesn't do backups.

I do backups all the time, but never of some tiny portion of my drive like just the browser. I usually do full image backups by schedule, that have individual file restore capability, and always to external devices or media. Anything less is kidding around.

It must be difficult getting dressed in the morning when you are as dumb as you appear to be.

I back up my data on a regular basis on all of my computers. If I'm making a major change to what is a critical application, I do special backups of that data as well. One doesn't expect data corruption, but intellegent people will attempt to mitigate possible damage.

Backups to external media was not necessary for something like this, as it is a regular part of the routine. My bookmark file is based on the same file I started using under netscape 1.x many years ago. You don't maintain data integrity without being careful.

Dumb? No dumb is making your "backup" to the same exact physical drive the data is on, LMAO.

So what, I do the same thing. But I keep my favorites list in HTML list format right on my own website, so I can access it where ever the heck I'm at. A concept this "dumb" guy thought of long before you, LMAO again.

Only a fool doesn't do backups.

Yup. That's why I shared how this can be done under Linux in the hope that someone might see it, and implement it as a part of their regular routine especially since it is so easy to implement as a script. I appreciated your contribution for the same reason.

It's also not just a BIW thing. When you upgrade by a major (and sometimes minor) version, Mozilla/Firefox may well update some values in your configuration to reflect changes in how the software does some things. If, for some reason, you decide that the upgrade wasn't really as ready for prime time as you thought, being able to restore your mozilla setup exactly as it was before can be the difference between things working, and not after you move back to the previous version.

It also provides an opportunity to create a snapshot of a configuration that is portable across systems, as well as a means of enabling you to test multiple browser versions easily.

Some people hang out on these forums just to kick up dust. Others actually contribute to discussions and try to help people out where they can.

It's not a backup for the case of physical drive failure you moron. It's a backup of data to facilitate recovery in case it is necessary to fall back to the previous version. Then again, you're aware of that and are just doing our normal troll routine.

You're a sorry excuse for a human being if this is all you can contribute to this forum. I'm done with you on this thread loser. Go bother someone who gives a damn what you say, if you can find such a demented person on Free Republic.

I had the same issue. It's the theme you're using. It's incompatible with 1.5.

Change it back to the default theme.

I haven't seen a need for TabBrowser preferences in this new releasae yet. It does everything the I wanted that extension for.

Thanks for the ping to that thread. I guess I missed it. Personally, I think these tech threads would be better if he'd be permanently banned for his troll like behavior. It's funny, but I can have a civil conversation with just about everyone else here but GE doesn't appear to be capable of it.

Um, I don't know where that came from. I thought we were having a civil conversation. The post you replied to was addressed to the resident troll, not you.

Um, I don't know where that came from.

Sorry. My bad. I clicked on the wrong post to reply to. GE had replied to one of my posts and I thought it was #104. I didn't even look at who sent it. I assumed it was GE replying to me.

Again, my apologies. Kumbayah.

Much like my ex-wife, he's pathologically incapable of either admitting a mistake or apologizing. Some people are just like that I guess. I really wish he'd go somewhere else to play thread disruptor.
