Good Books for Boys?

Posted on 12/07/2005 7:03:07 AM PST by FlatLandBeer

Have you ever noticed that there are tons of books written for girls in the bookstore. American Girls, Babysitter's club. sweet valley high..etc But almost nothing for boys. It remains mostly old Tom Swift jr books & Hardy Boys. Nothing new.

Boys need good books that address their interests that reinforce good moral values and masculinity. Anyone have any suggestions for good books?

Even the comic books suck these days and are written more for adults than for kids.

The Magic Tree House series is good, for early readers.

Anyone have any suggestions for good books?

The Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Reloading.

But you'll probably have to go to a gunstore to find it.

;)

What age range are you talking about? If I had a son, I'd feed him a steady diet of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, certain Heinlein books, etc. Yeah, I guess these are all old books, but most new books are pretty much soulless anyway. I hated Sweet Valley High when I was a teen. I wish someone had pointed me to Tolkein, etc.

I would like to recommend My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. My ten year old son read this when he was 8 and keeps a copy in his desk at school and at home. Also very
enjoyable to read together.

Matt Christopher has a series of sports oriented books. Captain Underpants is a funny series (playing to boys' natural fondness of potty humor); The Black Lagoon series (Gym Teacher, Cafeteria Lady, Principal...from the...) are pretty easy reads (lower elementary). And of course there is Harry Potter. But you are right...much of the early elementary publications are more girl oriented.

The Old Man and the Boy by Robert Ruark and Where the Red Fern Grows.

Classics that go back to the good old days. When it was okay to run in the woods and be a boy.

You could consider me "New Generation" Ive seen reading fall by the wayside.

I read...

Narnia (all 7)
Harry Potter
Lord of the Rings
"Inkheart" by Funke (Interesting)

These are very masculine survival books...

"The Hatchet"
and "My Side of the Mountain"
