I should make one point clear: I'm not defending AA per se. I'm simply saying that the 12-step approach to overcoming compulsive and addictive behavior is effective for many people, whether the addiction be alcohol, drugs, gambling, or a host of other destructive behaviors.

AA has its problems, no doubt. But at its core, the 12-step method is a brilliant, common-sense approach to sobriety that puts the burden entirely on the subject. It may not work for everyone, but it has saved countless lives, and improved countless more.

The fact that these two overgrown towel-snappers can't see past the most superficial layers doesn't do much to enhance their credibility as social satirists.

But according to 12 step it's the only way that works and that simply isn't the case.

I don't think there's anything to look past, the fact that AA insist all addiction is a disease and their approach is the only one possible does give it a cult like quality. And that right there is a well for satire, if you're going to satirize something you generally don't go past the funniest layer.
