'Apprentice' Winner Fires Competitor (on live TV! As unexpected as the Spanish Inquisition...)

Just seconds after being named this season's Apprentice, Randal Pinkett made his first executive decision -- he instructed Donald Trump not to hire his competitor Rebecca Jarvis.

"I think there should be only one apprentice," he said when Trump asked if Jarvis should also be hired. "I think that's the way it should be."

While it was obvious The Donald had planned on offering jobs to both candidates, Trump did not hesitate in granting Pinkett's wish and making him the sole Apprentice.

For Jarvis this was a huge slap in the face.

Not only did the 23-year-old outshine Pinkett during their final tasks -- hosting different fundraising events -- she has an exceptional resume, including starting a children's charity at only 15-years-old.

"Rebecca, I think you are brilliant and you have a tremendous future. Basically, I am stuck with two stars," said Trump.

In the end, it was Pinkett's extensive education (he's a Rhodes Scholar who attended both Oxford and MIT) and leadership abilities that won The Donald over.

"Randal, you have been outstanding. Rarely have I seen a leader as good as you," said Trump just moments before announcing his choice during the show's live finale at the Lincoln Centre in New York.

Although Pinkett was a shoo-in to win The Apprentice from the start, he failed to impress the boss during his last challenge, running a celebrity softball game and auction.

The 34-year-old, who did not check the weather forecast and was, therefore, caught off guard when it began to rain, did manage to pull off the auction segment of the event inside the baseball arena, but Trump and his executives were disappointed in the final product.

Jarvis, however, planned an exceptional event for Yahoo, right down to the little purple flashing light ice cubes that were served in the drinks. But her team failed to raise any money for their charity, which Trump felt was unacceptable.

As the winner of this season's The Apprentice, Pinkett will oversee massive construction projects at Trump's three hotels and casinos in Atlantic City.

Meanwhile, season five of The Apprentice is set to air next spring.

Don't get me wrong. Trump made the right choice. But she was/is extraordinarily talented and driven. Cripes, she had a broken ankle for most of the series, remember when Amarosa went into a coma when a two ounce piece of plaster hit her on the head?

I just think that Trump offered him something very positive, and he made the wrong choice. If I was Trump myself, I'd question that bigtime.

I don't know, it might be a blessing in disguise for her.

Trump is such a lime light lizard it seems his employees have to spend most the time dancing and twirling when HE enters the room, also creates too much competition underneath between all of them. Is there ever any actual time left for them to do their job duties? Bet there's a lot of back stabbing within the Trump organization(?).

Dumb as a box of rocks? Hmmm, well, for a guy who is 'dumb as a box of rocks' he has accomplished quite a lot. Not just in academia by the way, although the guy obviously excels in that as well .....the guy has started 5 companies (currently his baby is a multi-million dollar policy/tech/management firm). He also seems to be a rather good chap (he is heavy into charities ....and yes, I mean even before the whole Apprentice thing).

Thus for a guy who is 'dumb as a box of rocks' he seems to be doing quite well.

Could be. I doubt she's hurting, actually, I think many of those chosen were already millionaires from their own efforts.

But once Randal was hired - he then worked for the Trump organization. And his job was not to parade, it was to make decisions that would benefit the company. They had both even selected different tasks, so there wouldn't have been a conflict.

I gotta admit one thing, he is one smart dude!! 5 Degrees, owns 5 businesses, he's probably still a virgin...

LOL... You would think with a busy schedule like that, there wasn't any time left for personal relationships. It's why Trump has been through so many marriages, cause people like him are first married till death do them part to their career. I could've sworn the new apprentice winner is married, isn't he?

Randall is married - they showed his wife a couple times. They have been married less than a year and his face really lights up when he talks about her. They are very cute.

While I really liked Randall, I thought Rebecca got a raw deal. She is amazing for only being 23. Trump should offer her a job anyway.

Hello ? They showed a clip of him at home with his wife.
"Pinkett and his wife, Zahara Wadud-Pinkett, live in Somerset.."

His advice not to hire Rebecca was, to me, ungracious and out of character. It was unexpected, telling, and made great television.

Might still be a virgin. Not a brokebacker IMHO.

".she didn't raise any money..

Bingo! If it was a "weekly team task", then Rebecca would have been FIRED and sent packing from the Board room.

Randall's team took in $11,000 for charity. Rebecca sent her fat donors home with a goody bag and an "envelope" to send in. She said she didn't want to cheapen the Charity event by soliciting money before they left. But not one potential donor sent in a dime..

Randall deserved the win in the end.

Agree. And Rebecca was damn good.

But it was also kinda snarky for Trump to put him on the spot like he did. If I were Randall, I would have said "No ... I want her working for me."

Did anyone else notice that they left Trump's mike on for a little while after the exchange? You could hear him asking Rebecca if she were "upset" ...

Agreed. Give the option that was both magnanimous and in his employer's best interest, he instead chose the one that would be in his own self-interest. It must make the people about to begin working with him wonder whether the "real" Randal is the one we saw throughout the show, or if Trump caught him off balance and we got a glimpse into his actual thought processes.

A person doesn't get to where Trump is by wondering. I'd say Randalls ace was "Trumped".

I don't even think that the decision was in Randall's own self interest: it was completely ego-driven and self-centered and therefore self-destructive. Here's Trump talking about how he has two "stars" to chose from ... it should be obvious that in asking the question he intends to be more than just magnanamous to the person who came in second.

My guess is that Trump probably saw some things with Randall from the footage that didn't make it out of the editing room - and decided to test the guy. Although it did seem like Trump was a little taken aback by Randall's response.

LOL......the first winner wound up dating the girl from Bachelor who ws chosen by Andrew Firestone.

She then moved on to some other so called celeb.

Not sure what the apprentice is up to these day. He had his five minutes.

Randy would have made a good partner for Omarosa.
