I thought it was ok. A little bit long for a spell but the story was all right. Heath Ledger's acting was really good I thought.

Brokeback Mountain is IMO a really good picture, but not a great one.

Heath Ledger's performance as Ennis DelMar is Oscar-caliber, as is Michelle Williams' as his wife Alma. But it's very much his picture, and he paints a sympathetic and very human picture of a man with an unresolvable conflict. I liked and believed the other performances, but it's Ennis's story and it's Heath's picture.

The sex scenes, of which there is one from each of the three couples, are brief, modestly presented and once established, the film does not linger upon them. Later the guys also trade a passionate kiss or two, which might upset some folks. It's hard to tell from all the fuss you read just how secondary (although important) these scenes are to the story.

The majestic mountain scenery (shot in Alberta, Canada) has been called a additional character in the story. It provides a stunning contrast to the bleak settings of the rest of their lives. You can get an idea from the trailer (online) how beautiful the cinematography and art direction is.

Like any other doomed romance, it's sad, of course. It doesn't, and can't, end happily. But it's more of a love story than a 'message picture'.
