It's not arguable at all. They needed a second score to secure the win, remember the first play when the Steelers played the Colts in week 12, do you feel secure with a 6 point lead and 1 minute on the clock knowing the Colts can get a TD in 1 play?! It was the first time in two years Bettis lost a fumble, every possible stat leading up to that play indicated a TD would secure the victory and Bettis was the safest surest way to get the TD. That was the right call, in the playoffs you can't wait for victory to be handed to you, you must go get the win, that's what Cowher called and it was the right call, the kind of call SB winning coaches make. Kneeling and praying for time to run out knowing the other team can stop the clock 3 times is the kind of call perenial also rans make.

Sometimes bad things happen even when you make the right call, that's how sports work. A bad thing happened on that play, but it didn't make it the wrong call.

Proper strategy or not Cowher would have to sneak back to in P-Burg and clean out his house if that play loses the game.

Let's get down to brass tacks... did he go back to his pork rind hoagie after he was discharged?

In a similar story, a 76 yr. old Longhorn fan died minutes after the team from Texas won their 4th National Championship. His wish, before the game, was to live long enough to see Texas win another title. His family said; "He died a very happy man". True Story!

Doubt it. We were 9.5 point underdogs, losing on the last play by 1 point wouldn't be much of a disgrace. Though sometimes the fans react entirely with emotion and lack of football knowledge, the Rooneys are smarter than that.

Don't be ridiculous.

going for the TD would have functionally ended the game by restoring the two score lead, kneeling would have resulted in a FG and giving Indy the ball back with about 1:00 and only 6 points behind.

Also, a FG is a riskier play for a snafu than an off-tackle run. Had he taken a knee three times and then had a FG blocked, everyone'd be crying how he didn't have the balls to try for a TD.

Of course the refs tried in vain to get superstar peyton to the next round.

Joey Porter was so correct.

Amen... My wife apparently was trying to talk to me for like 30 seconds after the fumble, I was just staring at the TV not responding.

Yes, I need to get a life.

Hey I buy licensed NFL merchandise, some of my money is on that field.

No the Steelers weren't heavy favorites going against the Pats, favored yes but not heavy.

He's going to get fined hard for that and it'll be worth every penny. It's not like it was a snap call in the heat of the moment, the ref had (and took) all the time in the world to make the right call. It was obvious (nobody should quote football rules, the NFL apologized for it) and, especially given the standards of replay in that overruling should only happen with clear evidence to overturn the field call, the call should have stood.

If they'd lost, Cowher would have been banned for life for the things he would have said in the post-game presser.

Much like last year when Cowher sent in the FG team on 4th and 1 when down by more than a TD. And definitely FGs are more risky, more long snaps are botched than balls Bettis drops. Gotta go for the throat in the playoffs, there is no getting it back next week.

It wasn't just Troy's interception. There was the safety that wasn't called a safety, the interference NON-call when a defender was all over Randell El before the ball got to him, and the infamous NO CALL encroachment play. Sheesh. The officiating was just terrible, and I can't help but believe it was an effort to help out Tony Dungy and Peyton. Both nice guys, and we're all sympathetic about Tony's son, but please - the rules are the rules!

That's what I thought, too, but apparently it was decided yesterday that he is not going to be fined. The NFL has egg on its face and doesn't want to prolong the issue.

Wow. That's amazing. Even on overturned calls, people have gotten fined for saying much less than "The refs cheated to help the other guys." The league itself has to squash that kind of talk because it reflects on the integrity of the game. Even if it's a token fine or even one that they allow the team to pay off, they need to have a message.
