To me, the web sites are more a symptom of the disease....
Like I said, it's our culture's version of foot binding.
Me too! I love those dove ads.
About anorexia...its a sad, sad disease.
I used to be a teeny size 3. Even after having my first baby my measurements were something like 36-24-36. Then I had four more babies. Now, I'm a size 12, wishing I could at least be a size 8.
"Like I said, it's our culture's version of foot binding."
I love that description! You are absolutely right.
I have a friend who is a recovering anorexic. She was 5' and down to 68 pounds. Now she's up to 98 and feeling great. She's been on osteoporosis meds for years because her bones were so depleted. She can never carry a child to term. However, she just got the clear from the doctor to start an exercise program, but her husband is liking the "padding"!
Little aside - all my friends that are size four and below have had multiple health issues, and they're all under 35. Multiple miscarriages, bone fractures, respiratory infections that last weeks, etc. Each one was fixed after the woman put on a few pounds (5-10). Antedotal at best, but my experience.
It's not anecdotal.
In the rehab/long term care facilities, 20% above ideal body weight will live longer than those even 5% below.
Really?
That's actually pretty interesting. When will we hear that on the evening news? (I'm not holding my breath)
Yeah,
It's in my journals and it's the attitude when care planning to maintain weight, unless it's ridiculously high.
The very, VERY obese nursing home patients may experience higher mortality rates in the beginning, BUT the evidence suggests that a higher body weight may be protective among long-stay residents.
IOW, if you start lose weight in a NH, your chances of dying also start going up.
I was going to ping you to this thread - but changed my mind. I see you found it on your own.
Hug!
Yeah? People can be so stupid. That's a great way to identify with actual humans...
Slow death.
"For show?"
What are we dogs to you faying for the "Best In Show" ribbon?
"""What are we dogs to you faying for the "Best In Show" ribbon?"""
No, you ARE the ribbon.
ping
Anorexia and morbid obesity are mental illnesses. You can't help these people except to pray for them.
trannie?
"She can never carry a child to term."
I've often wondered about the longterm effects on a woman's fertility -- and, if she gets pregnant, the baby she's carrying. All that nutritional deprivation has got to affect the baby's physical & mental development.
I don't know if she got to the fertility part. Her bones were so damaged, her pelvis would fracture. Now that she's been on the osteo drugs for 5 years, that risk has minimized, but the docs don't know what the effects of the drug are (since it's made generally for post-menopausal women).
My other too-thin friends have had many issues with getting pregnant and staying pregnant.
