Opus Dei, which has protested its portrayal in "The Da Vinci Code," has embarked on an image-polishing campaign that includes its own book, a report said. New York-based Opus Dei is portrayed as a secretive Roman Catholic organization in the book by author Dan Brown and movie set for release in May, in which fictional assassin Silas is an Opus Dei monk.

Discusting. The Opus Dei conspiracy theories are getting tiresome.
Secretive, my eye.

You know it's funny - we have this story about "The Davinci Code" which basically trashes the Catholics in the midst of all these stories of Muslims telling us that we would never accept a non Islamic religion being trashed.
Not only was it acepted but the novel is one of the highest selling of all time.
Here's the website of this "secretive" Catholic apostolate.
Quoting from their website:
Opus Dei is a Catholic institution founded by St. Josemaría Escrivá. Its mission is to spread the message that work and the ordinary circumstances of life are occasions for growing closer to God, for serving others, and for improving society. Opus Dei complements the work of local churches by offering classes, talks, retreats and pastoral care that help people develop their personal spiritual life and apostolate.Gasp!
Proud to be part of the VRCC - Vast Roman Catholic Conspiracy!
I don't understand why this book is such a hot seller. I think it's damned mediocre. It's a rehash of Holy Blood, Holy Grail. And the part where the female lead forgives her uncle because in retrospect she understands his "ritual" was pagan. If I walked in on that nonsense, I'd be running out.
The only interesting item was the 666 pieces in the new extention to the Louvre. That's too weird and calculated.
His best work was Digital Fortress.
Did somebody say "Opus"?

Proof that the Conspiracy is even better concealed than we thought! The fiends!
I never knew he was god...
Opus Dei seems to have a wide range of practices, from the unremarkable to the totally bizarre. There are credible reports of Opus Dei members and groups engaging in things like self-flagellation to the point of major bleeding. Then again, I don't think anyone believes that Opus Dei member Antonin Scalia engages in such practices. The public face of Opus Dei disclaims any involvement in such things; the hard-core conspiracy theorists contend that the palatable public face is just to lure people into the "cult", and that the intention is to gradually pull as many people as possible into the extreme practices. The truth is probably that the whole spectrum exists within the many groups operating under the Opus Dei label, and that the extremists conceal their activities more to avoid having the Vatican publicly disavow their claim to be officially part of Opus Dei, than to deceive new members about the true nature of the organization.
Just goes to show...people are different.
There are credible reports of Catholics (Paul VI) wearing hair shirts and in Doctors of the Church (St. Theresa of Avila) engaging in self-flagellation. There's nothing new or secret to such acts of mortification. If anyone is doing serious harm to himself, it's most assuredly without the approval of the Church or the leadership of Opus Dei.
Because it's notoriously anti-Catholic. It attacks the Papacy and other Catholic traditions. You'd think Americans would be more interested in being anti-muslim in these dangerous times, but anti-Catholicism is pretty much an American tradition.
