Pardon my asking , but why is ESPN conducting this poll in the first place ? I'm in Japan , and don't keep up on such things , so pardon my ignorance if Redick possesses some negative qualities I've been happily unaware of . Is he an arrogant , loud-mouthed , overly cocky gutter rat or what ????

Don't feel alone. I've never heard of him either, but upon checking the link he is apparently some sort of college basketball player...I didn't bother to read to find out what school.
Keyword - DUKE .
OK ...some people hate Duke ...some people hate UConn ...but WHY Redick ? Would they conduct the same sort of poll on Marcus Williams ( laptop thefts ) of UConn , whose team is # 1 right now ? And I ask this as a UConn grad and huge fan ?

Because people hate Duke, and star white players at Duke get the reverse-McNabb treatment, that is, people want to hate Duke players don't want to be called a racist for publicly hating a black player, so the best white player on Duke becomes the lightning rod for all their vitriol.

Yea , this is more or less what I figured . But - when is the last time a white guy was the best player on a Duke squad ??? Laettner was good , but he was not the best . He wasn't hated , was he ?

Laettner was very much hated. And you're right, the white player doesn't even have to be the best player, Wojo was always the most hated player when he was at Duke.

You're right , but he is already being touted as a first round draft pick if he decides to forego his final year at UConn . Meanwhile , the press wonders if Redick can be even moderately successful in the NBA .
