Van Halen To Try For Singer # 4 On CBS Rockstar Show

Van Halen: The Next 'Rock Star'? February 12, 2006

Sources tell TMZ Van Halen is in the market for a new lead singer, and the marketplace will be the upcoming reality show 'Rock Star: The Series.'

Last October, Van Halen reps vehemently denied the band would use 'Rock Star' in a talent search for a new lead singer. The reps are now singing a different tune. Van Halen publicist Larry Solters told TMZ: "I'm not denying it. I'm not going to answer any questions about it."

Last year, the band INXS used 'Rock Star' to find a new lead singer. J.D. Fortune won the competition, and the band is now making a comeback with a hit new album and a sold-out tour.

As for Van Halen, the group has had three lead singers since it hit the scene back in 1978: David Lee Roth, who left the band in 1985, Sammy Hagar, who split in 1995, and Gary Cherone, who did just one album and tour with the band in 1998.

The next season of 'Rock Star,' produced by Mark Burnett for CBS, is scheduled to air during the summer. Neither Burnett nor CBS would comment on the Van Halen buzz.

Not one bad song on this album,IMO.

I liked every one of their songs on each album prior to For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Fair Warning just seems to bring back great memories more than the others.

My parents were horrified.

I can only imagine.

When I saw Dave in concert the first time, he came out over the crowd riding a giant blown up microphone. It was funny and only Diamond Dave could get away with that.

I hear the Monkeys are making a comeback and could use a new singer...

Oh, for goodness' sake, don't turn this into another evolution/intelligent design thread.

No DL Roth.

Hagar was the best.

The winning combination was VH + Roth. Nothing else works as well as that.

But Roth is 25 years older now. It wouldn't work today. Van Halen should just hang it up, they've had a good run. Eddie can keep himself busy doing soundtracks, or even start a new band.

One of my favorites, too, MG.

What's funny about that pic is the fact that Sammy's 8 years older than Dave. Looking at them, you'd assume the opposite.

David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar actually toured together once. I wonder how that went. I heard that Roth had some difficulties with his voice.

Dave rocks more before 9 AM than most people do in their entire lives.

Or retiring. Seriously...those tracks he did in 2004 on the Best of discs with Sammy are just awful...those riffs and solos are leftovers from the Balance sessions at best. His playing live has nose dived and his solo was quite simply the worst he has ever done.

I disagree with most and thing Van Halen 3 with Cherone was one of the best VH shows I had ever seen. I got front row tickets for that for free and had the time of my life..Gary is a great performer and has a great voice...the album's production however was horrible and people at that point wanted Sammy back in a bad way.

Yes and I went to that tour...love both singers in a big way...Sammy's show was off the hook and Michael Anthony came out with Sammy and played 5 songs...very cool and party like atmosphere. Dave's show was like watching a cover band and I left half way through after Roth did the masturbating Jack Danniels bottle skit that he has been doing since 1978.

What I don't understand is that there are bands from these eras that are consistently overlooked while the industry keeps flogging the same reunions at us (with incomplete lineups).

Not to mention the new bands that can't get a foot in the door.

People got on the Doors' case for doing some shows with other singers.

Wasn't the first time the Doors went on without Jim. Didn't they put out TWO albums of new material after his death?

They kept the search out there for a singer.

Clarance Gatemouth Brown did. He didn't treat his cancer and continued smoking.

The Hagar/Roth fights can actually get to fist throwing. A friend of mine saw it.

Now that's classic!

Wish I'd seen that tour just to have watched Roth go bananas during "Jump."

"People got on the Doors' case for doing some shows with other singers."

Most egregious was in not have Densmore on drums.
