Why?

For or against, why is this important? It's not a state and from everything I hear about the place they don't want to be one anytime soon.

I don't want all those electoral votes going to the Dims

Not too important except to Purto Ricans. The tax angle is important to me. Also, if they become independent I would forsee a socialist/marxist government pretty quick. Castro would be meddling for sure.

And finally, finding polls to freep is cheap entertainment!

They've had more than enough time to decide, and I still don't see any overwhelming urge to deviate from the "status quo", and I personally think that's wrong.

I vote cut them loose and let them go it alone in the world. Not abandon them, but let them have their independence.

My other take is that many of those with ambition are already here in the states.

The last thing in the world we need is two more democratic senators.

I served with a few Puerto Ricans while in the Army, and your take is right on the money from what they told me.

making it a state.

Looks like we've smoked out one liberal who is salivating over the idea of a couple of Democrat senators and a bunch of safe democrat electoral votes.

No. the question was what will cost less. PR is a major drain on our taxes in its current status and they provide us with almost nothing in return.

You want to see this in action, visit NYC.

No. the question was what will cost less.

And a democrat president, two more senators, and a handful of congressmen is going to be a lot more expensive than independence. Let them get their welfare money from Venezuela.

The only registered pro-independence political party on the island consistently gets less than 5% of the vote in each general election.

The current arrangement is costing each of you about $400.00 a year. Statehood would bring tax parity.

Certainly! (Two more liberal Senators buying votes.....)

But the democrats would take advantage of the "change" in the nbr of states to demand DC would be be brought in as a 52 state at the same time: Add two MORE liberal (assured) racist Senators!

And (at least) four more liberal racist Rep's as well.

"pay 0 to the US in return."

This is a myth. Residents of Puerto Rico pay Social Security taxes, medicare taxes and unemployment taxes at the same rate as mainland residents but at a fraction of the return.
