Do you think the President's economic recovery proposals will help the middle class?

Many other forums/comment sections include a variety of rating systems (i.e. macrumors, reddit, yahoo...) I find some of these particularly helpful when navigating different posts. I often find myself scanning comments in an effort to gauge the overall sentiment of the freerepublic users on a particular story as I hold this forum in high esteem and value the opinions of those on this site. I also believe it would be nice to get feedback on our own posts, whether in the form of up-votes, thumbs, stars, etc. Anyone else out there want some sort of simple comment rating system?

BANGOR, Maine — Occupy protesters in Bangor, Aroostook County, Portland and Augusta all are readying themselves for a long winter’s stay as the municipal rules governing their occupations — and cold temperatures — increase. They’re also brushing up on their knowledge of municipal regulations, and so are community officials.

Leave it to right-wing think tanks to tell the world that teachers are overpaid. Right wingers hate unions and they hate paying public employees, so keep that in mind as you try to digest recent surveys from The American Enterprise Institute and the Heritage Foundation that say teachers just make too much money.

Herman Cain is hitting back at Morgan Freeman for calling the Tea Party racist. The Republican presidential candidate called the Oscar-winning actor’s eyebrow-raising remarks “short-sighted” on Friday. "Most of the people that are criticizing the Tea Partiers about having a racist element, they have never been to a Tea Party," Cain told Fox News. Freeman, who endorsed Obama in 2007, created a firestorm when he told CNN’s Piers Morgan earlier this week that conservative opposition to the President has enflamed racism in America. He added the Tea Partiers have the mentality of "Screw the country, we're going to do whatever...

Atheists led by PZ Myers are trying to deny the will of the people of Ohio in selecting a sticker handed out at the polls on election day. Up until this past Thursday or Friday, a very patriotic sticker with the Ohio motto -- "With God, all things are possible" -- was in the lead with over 40% of the vote. The atheists have been manipulating the vote, which closes Monday, because of their personal dislike for that motto. Please help turn this back around. Thank you! http://www.sos.state.oh.us/SOS/ElectYourSticker.aspx?page=1634

Election year is just 6 months away and Sarah Palin is working the crowd…sort of. Her latest bus tour has a lot of people wondering what she’s up to. In an effort to not have the media follow her around; Palin has opted to not disclose where she’s going next until she’s there. It’s an interesting, albeit confusing, tactic and has a lot of people wondering what she’s planning. Some are speculating that Palin is setting the stage for a Presidential or Vice Presidential bid in the 2012 elections. Others are just plain confused at why her bus tour is...

"The stampede is on," Archibishop Timothy Dolan wrote in a blog post. "Our elected senators who have stood courageous in their refusal to capitulate on the state's presumption to redefine marriage are reporting unrelenting pressure to cave-in." He equated the move to allow same-sex marriage to life in China or North Korea, where "government presumes daily to 'redefine' rights, relationships, values and natural law." Meanwhile, New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms, an evangelical Christian group, warned that Republicans who support gay marriage will face primaries next year as the GOP seeks to keep control of the chamber.

Yes - if she runs, she'd have the same chance as any of the other GOP front-runners to win the nomination. No - regardless of whether she runs or not, there are stronger Republican candidates. Still haven't made up my mind.

Some of the statements released by various members of the 2012 GOP field related to former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee’s decision not to run for President next year. This post will be updated as more candidates release their statements over the next day or so. Jon Huntsman: “Our country has been very fortunate to have Mike Huckabee as a leader and public servant. His commitment to this country and its core values — life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness — is a model to which all elected officials should aspire. It is unfortunate that we will not have his...

As President Barack Obama continued hurting this country as a failing president, compounding the progressive economic catastrophes of George W. Bush, The Gazette’s editorial board became fed up with the “birther” movement of conspiracy theorists who believed Obama was a foreigner. These people are to the right what 9-11 conspiracy nuts are to the left. On Feb. 17, this column stated: “The president enjoys an ongoing distraction that’s more valuable than anything he or his advisers could have contrived. "While the president pretends to cut spending — telling a whopper about proposing a balanced budget — a chunk of his...

Texas - A Texas lawmaker says a tax on soda is one way the state can get a handle on the massive budget shortfall. The bill would put a one-cent tax per ounce of regular or diet soda sold in retail stores. Supporters say the luxury tax would give the budget a much needed boost. Lawmakers say the bill would also be beneficial because it could cause Texans to drink less soda.

WINTER PARK, Fla. -- In Florida, gun owners can't holster their guns outside of their clothing, but that could change if a piece of legislation turns into law. It's called "open carry" and it's drawing plenty of attention from advocates and opponents alike. Charles O'Meara of Shoot Straight, a firearms store, thinks the law would scare those who don't own guns and create opportunities for crime. "I don't think it's fair to make those people feel uncomfortable, but the bigger part is, what happens when someone walks up behind the gun owner and pulls the gun out of its holster?...

JACKSON — A video circulating on the Internet shows a Mississippi special needs student being punched in the face, and now the teenager’s family wants stiffer punishment for the attacker and implementation of a stronger bullying policy. Amy Snyder said Monday that her nephew, a 16-year-old freshman at East Union High near New Albany, was punched Feb. 25. She said the other student was wearing a boxing glove when he hit her nephew in the school gymnasium during a study hall. She said it was a violent and unprovoked attack. Snyder said her nephew functions on a 10-year-old level and...

INDIANAPOLIS — Over the howls of hundreds who are gathering at the Statehouse to protest, Republican state lawmakers are pushing forward this week with several measures that reduce the influence of organized labor. Funding for unions could suffer a blow under the most controversial of those bills — one that would allow workers at all Indiana businesses to choose not to pay union membership dues. Proponents call it "right to work," and a House committee endorsed it Monday.

I'm not convinced any of the people on this list can beat the President, partially because of previous stumbles and partially because of the math. Still, primaries are all about persuading your fellows to vote for your candidate, unlike the general election which is about holding your nose and voting for the idiot your fellows chose instead. So who's it going to be?
