A British official conducting a coroner's inquiry into Princess Diana's death reportedly thinks American and French intelligence agencies may be able to shed new light on what happened that night in August 1997 as Diana and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, fled paparazzi.
The allegations read like something out of a James Bond novel — that U.S. secret agents had bugged Diana's cellular phone and that her driver that night in Paris was a French spy.
Lord Stevens, the British official investigating Diana's death, has reportedly subpoenaed more than 1,000 pages of transcripts from U.S. authorities, who were monitoring Diana's calls at the request of their British counterparts.
British detectives have already confirmed the princess was using her cell phone moments before the crash and have raised the possibility that her last conversation was included in the top secret file.
French authorities also may not be cooperating fully with the inquiry. Diana's driver, Henri Paul, was reportedly a freelance agent for French intelligence. But anonymous sources quoted in the British press say French officials are refusing to hand over their files.
"Neither the CIA nor French intelligence seems to be cooperating," said Ingrid Seward, the editor of Majesty Magazine.
Stevens said he still assumed that Diana's death was an accident. She was killed in a car crash in a Paris tunnel in 1997. But in a rare television interview with Britain's GMTV, he recently hinted there might be more to it than that.
"The investigation was far more complex than we previously thought," Stevens said.
Maybe they thought Dodi was a security problem.
There's your problem. Most of the fascination has to do with personally unsatisfied individuals projecting fictional back-stories onto the woman. Start with your ugly-duckling theory. Diana didn't become beautiful any more than Chelsea Clinton did. The media just wished it on her. She was actually pretty plain looking up until the day she died. This secret agent nonsense is just another example.

I agree with you. They did a "re-enactment" on some show on Discovery or A&E, one of those channels, with the drinking aspect of it. The men participating drank up to the level that the driver supposedly registered, and these men could barely stand up. This Henry guy was not even slightly staggering in the surveillance tapes. But who knows?
What's weird is this is still not a closed case. If this is an accident (which it most likely was) why is it still being investigated 8 1/2 years later? Hmmm...where did I put that tinfoil?
I think you're in the minority concerning assessment of her beauty. And I'm not personally unsatisfied. Why do you believe that H. Paul being a secret agent is nonsense? I happen to believe that her death was an accident. But I believe that Diana herself makes a very interesting story.
I saw that program, and that's what convinced me that H. Paul was not drunk.

Lets see: The driver was a French Intelligence agent, Thats an oxymoron right there. Now what Frenchman has the balls to commit suicide to take out Diana who is of absolutely no value as a target. I say not a one of them.
No she was out with her Arab boyfriend they were about half in the bag and in a hurry to get to their room for some hump-a-humpa. Their driver got drunk early on and they didnt want the Papparazzi following them to their little shack-up so they had this drunk driving way beyond his sober ability and hit the wall.
Result one dead Arab, One dead princess, One dead drunken driver and one injured security guard who wasnt very good at his job.

Then if you're looking for an "interesting story," I suggest "The Emperor's New Clothes." The media does this all the time. They just did it with Sarah Jessica Parker, who is flat-out horsey, but the media loves her, so she is a sex symbol. Diana wasn't ugly. She just wasn't pretty either. And she was a princess. Grace Kelly was pretty.
I've just got one question: If there's nothing screwy going on with this story, why did the Brits wait 9 years to hold their own inquest?
Oh sure, this is a no brainer. A muslim monarch. Unacceptable. The British smoked their own. She was foolish. You don't take an entire nation down, just because you don't feel loved. Give me a break.
Because the Brits are not stuck on STUPID.
How do you come up with a "muslim monarch"? Diana herself was never in the line of succession, and any children she had with a subsequent husband would not have been, either.
