I detest the media's fascination with covering live, and in great detail, the rape and murder of pretty women (Inspiration for rant, current live coverage of the sentencing hearing, on ALL news channels, of Joseph Smith's penalty hearing).
They have been describing the torture and rape of a little girl in Florida for 45 minutes now, with a split screen showing her sweet picture while they describe everything this monster did to her.
This is perverted voyeurism pretending to be righteous outrage and I see right through it.
I'm damn tired of it. I'm sick because the media, and I presume a large segment of their audience, laps up this stuff... Carlie Brucia, Natalie Holloway, Laci Peterson, Jon Benet Ramsey.... on and on and on.
Covering these trials, and lapping up these details has become a major form of entertainment. Resist this temptation to pour over details too vile to show on regular TV. Immersing yourself in the real life rape, mutilation, and murder of pretty girls is NOT A HEALTHY FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT.
If no one watched, I doubt they would show it.
It's been this way in the popular press since the 1800's. Something less than savory in human nature... go figure.
There are some on FR who love these tragedy pimps and their sickening stories. I got bashed the last time I questioned that moron, Greta.
I'm sick of it too. If your not young and pretty seems like nobody cares.
Stories about rape, kidnapping, murder like these (especially of children!) thoroughly sicken me. I avoid them like the plague. I can't fathom why people would want to watch - but they do.
I'm sick of it too. As a matter of fact, I'M AS MAD AS HELL, AND I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE THIS ANYMORE!
You're absolutely correct.
Stray bullet kills girl at her birthday party
How many times do we have to see Nancy Grace start her show with "tonight, BREAKING NEWS in the case of..."--and we hear
stuff that was 'breaking' two days ago...
"The bubble headed bleach blonde goes on at 5
She can tell you bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
It's INTERESTING when people die
Give us dirty laundry
"Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet
You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set, we need dirty laundry."
Though I gotta admit even I will watch for awhile if it's
a case of interest, like the Entwistles here in Mass.
As long as people tune in and give it high ratings,
it will continue.
Great term.
Some mayhem that I would have never before dreamed of watching willingly, I know I would want to watch today: e.g. images of all the death of 911.
Neither you nor the government should have the moral, or legal power to prevent me from doing so.
you got that right
you got that right
you got that right
The only positive this may serve is if other young women listen to these horrific details of what happened so they don't end up being the next national story! Maybe some moms would be more concerned with daughters walking home alone and keping closer tabs on them. I know younger women think they can take care of themselves or it won't happen to them but when I think back to the 70's hitching here and there with a friend I don't remember thinking about what could happen. The saddest part of these cases is this Smith animal won't die for years when sentenced to death. He'll probably outlive many of us! They should impose on him how he murdered Carlye-by choking. Very sad to see her family, I just can't even imagine hearing all of that.
Sir, I beg your pardon!
The media is all over that story in Chicago.
