Easter bunny gets the boot in St. Paul

A cloth bunny and pastel-colored eggs with the words "Happy Easter" were taken down from the lobby of the St. Paul City Council offices Wednesday after someone questioned whether it was appropriate to note the Christian holiday. "It's not about being politically correct or anything else. Someone complained, everyone stopped and said, 'We ought not to do this,' " said Council President Kathy Lantry. "As government, we have a different responsibility about advancing the cause of religion, which we are not going to do."

The decorations belong to one of the council secretaries and were not bought with city money.

St. Paul Human Rights Director Tyrone Terrill sent Lantry an e-mail asking that the Easter decorations come down because they "could be offensive to non-Christians."

Council Member Dave Thune said "it's a shame" to remove the items. "This has just gone too far," he said. "We can't celebrate spring with bunnies and fake grass?"

Well, the Easter Bunny is offensive to some people who DO celebrate Easter, too. Nonetheless, I'm tired of people exercising this "right" to never be exposed to anything that might offend them...

Very well said.

I celebrate Easter, as does my family. But, we also understand the bunny thing.

What does a bunny rabbit have to do with Christianity?

Then why take it down?

You'll have to ask the powers that be that question.

Good grief ...

"In December 2001, a flap over poinsettias in City Hall received national attention when some officials banned red poinsettias from the holiday display on the main floor lobby, saying they were associated with Christmas and therefore promoted a religious holiday. White poinsettias were allowed, though.

That led to a middle-of-the-night foray by several judges, who smuggled many red poinsettias into the building and placed them amongst the white plants. Officials allowed the red plants to stay and the following year allowed both colors in the display."

Exactly... there doesn't seem to be any confusion about who rose from the dead on that Easter Sunday, 2000 years ago.

Sheesh!

,,, better get PETA in on this. The bunny is being marginalised big time. Easter for Christians doesn't really involve hollow chocolate eggs and bunnies any more than Christmas trees relate to the birth of Jesus.

They'd better change the name of the town - "St. Paul" smacks of Christianity...

They could change the name back to what it was until 1841. I wonder how the "non-Christians would go for "Pig's Eye".

Rabbit-hating started with Jimmah Carter, but I think Christian hating is now in their party platform.

this rabbit-hating business all started with Jimma Carter

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.

Go ask Kathy, when she's 10 feet tall.

I wonder if they will take down the 40 foot marble
statue of the Native American god there in the city hall
atrium.
Meanwhile, good luck getting someone from city works to
come fix a pothole as fast as they'll hop to it to take down a bunny picture.

How about this ~ the city employees who decided they know what is or is not "Christian" should be fired. After all, they thought Easter Bunnies were Christian and then started making their decisions on that basis.

They should not have listened to any claim regarding what was or was not Christian. Their job is to their job in a straightforward, secular fashion according to secular, nonreligious principles.

That means they quit pretending they're the Pope or something.
