I have learned that when I don't understand how to do something, the best place to come is to Free Repubic where the smartest people in the world congregate.
I have come into possession of 10 shares of stock. I want to sell them, but I don't know what to do. So, if you could instruct me on the best way to go, I would appreciate it so much.

How were they issued to you? Do you have a brokerage account?

They were issued by the company I just left. They came from the company's stock broker, I guess. Called Computershare in Ill.
I do not have a brokerage account.

Bring the shares to a local discount brokerage and deposit them. They can sell them or hold them for you. Don't sign the back of the cert beforehand.

Get a stock broker or contact a friend with a broker. You'll have to transfer the certificate (I assume it is a stock certificate if you have it) to the broker, and you can sell it from the account.
You might want to check to see if it is worth your trouble. 10 shares of Birkshire Hathaway would be worth a lot more than 10 shares of Enron. Also check to see if the stock has split - what used to be 10 shares might be more now.

Open an account with Scottrade.
Then sell your stock for a low $7 commission.
It won't cost you to open the account, but you will need a minimum ($2,000 I think?)
Then you can close the account if you want. So all you're out is $7.

Oh, I know... 90% of it is good natured... 10% of its just mean. I ignore the 10% and laugh with the 90%...

I prefer to free float my stocks, but when more appropriate, I'll bed them with aluminum or glass.
